Abigail's at Fault
A little white lie is still a lie. The Crucible written by Arthur Miller talks about how puritans live such a strict Christian based life until people believe witches are crawling through the towns of Salem. People start going crazy with hangings as Abigail Williams keeps talking about “seeing” people with the devil. Just to save her own self from being hung. Abigail Williams is to blame for the Salem witch trials of 1692 because she lied, accused innocent people and had an affair with a married man.
Abigail lied about witchcraft and blamed innocent people. Some may say Tituba could be at fault for causing the Salem witch trials because she had the original idea
to lie.”I danced for the devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; … I saw Sarah Good with the devil I saw Goody Osburn with the devil”(Act: 1 Line: #1053). Tituba took a risk and “confessed” to seeing the devil. Which gave the girls the idea to lie about seeing the devil too. Although Tituba lied and blamed others Abigail got multiple people killed and put in prison.”I didn't see no devil! ... I never sold myself! I’m a good girl! I’m a proper girl”(Act:1 Lines #:890-901). Abigail said she never saw the devil but once Tituba got off the hook for “confessing” Abigail decided to declare that's she saw the devil too. If Abigail and the girls never did witchcraft in the woods. Then they would not have lied about seeing people with the devil and a lot fewer people would have died.
Abigal will go to any length to prevent herself from getting in trouble.
Abigail had an affair with John Proctor a married man. Many people believe John could be at fault because he cheated on his wife.”I have known her, sir. I have known her.”(Act:3 Line:842) If John Proctor did not have an affair with Abigail she wouldn't have done witchcraft in the woods. Nonetheless, John cheated on his wife for Abigail but Abigail had an affair with a married man who was twice her age. “ I have rung the dorm of my good name you will believe me. Mr. Danforth! My wife is innocent except she knew a whore when she saw one”(Act:3 Line)
John was willing to give up and tarnish his good name and his family's because he felt so strongly that what Abigail was doing was wrong. If John would not have admitted to committing adultery reverend hale would have kept charging puritans for being witches.”I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart”(Act:1 Lines 465-466)
Abigal should not have got with John since he is a married man. Abigail would have never lied or fulfilled in doing witchcraft in the woods if she was not jealous of Elizabeth Proctor. If Abigail wouldn't have had an affair The Salem witch trials would have been prevented As a result of Abigail lying and having an affair with a married man, she is to blame for The Salem witch trials. Abigail lied and accused others and Abigail had an affair. Now people can really see how powerful a lie can really be. A little white lie is still a lie.
