Regardless of the advantages, society must abolish embryonic stem cell research because it authorizes murder, immoral justifications and is unnecessary for medical treatments.
Embryonic stem cell research motivates murder. Since embryonic stem cell research relies on the production of destroyed embryos, abortion must be in duration. Moreover, an embryo exists as an immature form of a human being, so destruction of an embryo would be murder. In contrast, pro-choice advocates believe that an embryo exists as a woman’s body and therefore, do not find abortion as murder of an innocent being. To substantiate, Nichols, an associate of the Department of Philosophy and the University of Wisconsin, certifies in his article “Abortion, Time-Relative Interests” that “...abortions are immoral, for the same reason that killing you or me is immoral: abortion deprives the fetus of a valuable future” (1). Because the future of a fetus endures a human being, abortion would result in the same effect of murder. That person’s right to experience life would diminish just as a victim to murder. There are various ways in which stem cell research can be done without murder. Such methods sustain ethical integrity and prevent societal interests from overriding the most important aspect: life. On the contrary, advocates of stem cell research that requires abortion, find that stem cell research can only be accomplished one way and the other methods are inefficient. To validate, Norman, an affiliate of the School of Philosophy and Bioethics, validates in his article “A Catholic Ethical..” that “Human stem cells can be derived from umbilical cord blood, bone marrow (haematopoietic), fetal tissue, and even from the nose’s olfactory mucosa...These are non embryonic (6)”. Norman continues with another non embryonic method known as altered nuclear transfer which is the attainment of pluripotent (capable of giving rise to different cell types) stem cells through modification of somatic stem cell nuclei (7). The methods illustrated substantiate that murder does not need to occur in order to provide societal interests. In addition, this expresses that science only acts as a tool ,and thus, is neither righteous or evil. In other words, responsibility must be present with great potential. In utilizing such options, society progresses since one’s life is not sacrificed for
