How is he a hero you ask? Well for starters, he helped abolish slavery. He knew that slavery was wrong, so on January 1, 1863 he made the Emancipation Proclamation. This was a document that outlawed slavery in the south. All the southern states were for slavery and got mad when their slaves started to run
away. They tried to fight back, but eventually they lost and all the slaves were freed.
This leads me into my next reason as to why he is a hero. He helped the civil war end and keep the country together. He did so much for us just by being a strong leader that didn’t break under pressure. Eventually he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth but that only made him a martyr, a symbol of freedom for the union to unite under and finish the confederates. His face was even put on Mount Rushmore.
Now some people would argue that what he did wasn’t right because he took the south’s “property”. And that may be true, but because of what he did American History moved forward. Sure he didn’t believe that blacks should have the same rights as whites such as voting and serve on juries. But he still fought for their freedom, always looking for a way to end it all. Because slavery is wrong. A famous quote of his is “All men are created equal”.
At the time people would not have said what they are saying about him now. But over the years, people have started to realize just how much he helped this country. He was an inspiration to many people. He was someone who you could look up to. He was by far the best president for this country. And if he wasn’t elected, then we would not be where we are today.
