Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th 1809 Hodgenville, Kentucky and grew up mostly in Kentucky and Indiana. Lincoln was born in abject poverty, and like many other poor children, he could not afford a decent and formal education. However, he succeeded in self-educating himself to the point of becoming a lawyer in Illinois. After a stint in the legal profession, he tried his hand in politics and public service and become a Member of the Illinois House of Representative, a position he held for twelve years. While communicating to his audience, Lincoln always took great care to not only craft a good message, but also make sure that he delivered it well. He spoke to both the minds and hearts of his audience. In a biography titled Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, Doris Kearns Goodwin says the following regarding Lincoln’s communicative prowess: “His speaking went to the heart because it came from the heart. Mr. Lincoln’s eloquence…produced conviction in others because of the conviction of the speaker himself” (Goodwin, 2006). The way to achieve effective communication – being real. Lincoln was not in the habit of saying things that he never believed in. He spoke directly and clearly. In the “Gettysburg Address" and "Second Inaugural Address,” Lincoln went directly to the point, coming across as a master thinker and communicator who spoke to clear up matters, not to confuse his audience. By ending the Civil War, slavery and preserving the Union, Lincoln accomplished more than any other pioneer in the historical backdrop of the United States. Besides, Lincoln also managed to modernize the economy and strengthen the federal government. Thanks to his leadership skills and ability to make timely and effective decisions, Lincoln was able to restore sanity, peace and order in a rather chaotic and confused country. That is why his place is secured in the books of history. Even as of today, more than a century and a half after he was assassinated, leaders have a lot to learn from him. Lincoln will always be remembered, not just as the 16th president of the United States, but also as a great leader who demonstrated exemplary leadership and was able to inspire a generation, during his time as well as in the many years that
