How did slavery ended? Abraham Lincoln shaped our country of what it is today. How did Abraham Lincoln's values defined society during his time of power? Abraham Lincoln values defined society by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery in 1863. Abraham Lincoln became the first republican president and used federal power for income taxes and free public colleges. Abraham Lincoln played a vital part during the civil war by, claiming victory, reunite the Union and Confederacy.Abraham Lincoln had leadership, Freedom, and success. On January 1, 1863 , Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all slaves held shall be free in the states. This allowed the African Americans in the Army and Navy. Abraham Lincoln became Republican because he believed in social justice and equal rights. During his presidency, Abraham protested against the Mexican American War and disputed Free-Trade. The reason Abraham chose to fight the Civil War was because in the South, most slaves didn’t receive news about the Proclamation, So the North was not only fighting in order to save the Union, but to end slavery. Even though there were lot’s of lives lost on the battlefield, Abraham kept fighting till the Confederacy was defeated and claimed victory. In the end, Abraham reunited the union and Confederacy back into one. “Even by the end of the American Civil War, with his great victory at hand, many still did not appreciate Lincoln's greatness until after his death and historians were able to piece together the story of his presidency” (Gravlin,1).
