not always held in high esteem. The hostility between black and white workers reached a new high in the beginning of the Civil war. The Civil War was important because it affected African Americans and their future in America. A mandated draft and growing competition for jobs caused turmoil amongst Eastern European immigrants and Blacks. The general reaction in the North to Lincoln proclamation was unfavorable. Many Whites felt the war original purpose was to saving the union but it had shifted to that freeing of the slaves.
The group of people who felt the changes the most were Blacks and women. Their roles in American society changed during the war and after. It was President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation that allowed Blacks to become soldiers of the Union Army. Before that date, black men wanted to become a part of the Union Army but they were prohibited from it by the federal law. Also the Emancipation Proclamation fostered the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution that outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude. However, racism was alive and prevalent in the United States.
The transition from slavery to freedom during the war presented serious challenges both to the union army and to destitute blacks. Racial discrimination of black American soldiers was especially prevalent also in the North of the country. The affairs of the civil war ending slavery caused runaway slaves to be a burden, the emergence of black soldiers, and women being influential in the war. Black soldiers performed a variety of duty. However there was discrimination amongst black and white soldiers. One major problem was the disparity of pay. White soldiers received $13 a month and $3.50 for clothing whereas black soldiers received $7 a month and $3 a month respectively. Women supported men by donating supplies both to the North and the South. Women served as combatants, worked in military hospitals, and spied to discover valued information to aid their respective region. The Odyssey section part 2 of the Civil War had a peculiar image of a union black troop beside a white woman. The white woman represented justice and freedom. The black man beside a white woman in 1800s connoted that man was trying to have sexual relations with the white woman. I thought it was interesting because black men will killed or lynched because they inappropriate contact with a white woman but that flag represented liberation of slaves. I also I liked the display of “Forever Free”, the visual image of free blacks standing outside of church. Black people forming their own communities even during the slavery era, owned homes, businesses, and churches without the assistance of whites is important. Black own businesses and communities uplifted black people their descendants something to be proud about.
