How Did The South Lead To The Civil War

It is often assumed that the civil war was based solely on the existance of slavery in the south. This assumption is generally made by people who are not fully educated on the topic, and are unable to fully understand each of the different factors that led to the civil war. While slavery did play an important role in the disunion of the north and south, the war itself was caused by disunion and disunion alone (Schweitzer, Jeff). The largest factors leading to the war composed of state's rights, followed by disagreement on tarriffs. The primary difference between the north and south was not the fact that the north wanted to abolish slavery, but more of the fact that the south was primarily agriculturally based around cotton. The settlers composed of people who both supported, and opposed slavery. Because of this, violence broke out throughout Kansas. However, Kansas was considered a state in the union. On January 29th in 1861, slavery was abolished in Kansas. This angered the south and gave the appearance of the national government wanting to abolish state rights and make every state listen to them. This threat to southern living was a huge factor in the civil war. Ultimately, the beginning of the civil war was sparked just as any other war is. Gunfire erupted on an opposing side. In April of 1861, confederate troops began to fire on Fort Sumter. This occured due to President Lincoln resupplying troops at Fort Sumter. The gunfire on Fort Sumter was not the true beginning of the war. Rather, it was Lincoln having 75,000 volunteers attempt to put down the rebellion (Slavery: Cause and Catalyst of the Civil War).
