The first event occurred in 1820 and was named the Missouri Compromise. It all began with the disagreement between pro-slavery and anti-slavery. The breaking point happened in 1819, when Missouri requested to be a slaved state. It was such a big deal, because there were twenty-two states, which were evenly split into eleven slave states and eleven free states. Hence why there was so much tension on Missouri being a slave state, because it would throw off the balance. Congress then coordinated a two-part compromise, letting Missouri become a slave state, but making Maine become free state. This was when the Missouri Compromise was set into place. Any states above the 36° 30’ latitude line are free states excluding Missouri. Any states below the 36° 30’ latitude line are slave states.
