To What Extent Was The South Justified In The Civil War

The Civil War started April 12,1861 with the attack on Fort Sumter. It was a war fought to preserve the Union and to free the slaves in the South. The North was more justified then the South for fighting the civil war because president Abraham Lincoln was trying to abolish slavery and bring the Union back together. The South was trying to keep slavery because without it there would be no one to pick the cotton, and that at the time was how the South made money.
The civil war began with the attack on Fort Sumter and the war was inevitable according to text. "Both parties deprecated war but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish, and the war came." What the quote says is both sides despised war, but the North would rather fight than let the nation split, and the South would accept war rather than surrender. With the South making the first attack, it makes Lincoln more justified to fight the war. President Lincoln brings positive outcomes of the civil war, unlike the South, they want to keep slavery. Men and women were brutally whipped sometimes murdered and forced to work all day. Women were raped and children were put to work at a young age.
In Lincoln's letter to Horace Greeley he said "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery." On December 20, 1860 the South seceded from the Union before Lincoln addressed his view on slavery for fear of losing it.
