The theme of both passages is very similar. In both the folk tale and the poem an elderly member of the family is mistreated by other members of the family. In “The Old grandfather and His Little Grandson” the grandfather is not allowed to sit at the family's table due to his lack of teeth which caused him to drop food out of his mouth. In the poem “Abuelito who” it is implied that the speaker is not allowed to open the grandfather's door to see him or see if he wants to play. Also, the main characters are mistreated by the other members of their family. The parents of the grandson in the folk tale scold the grandfather for being messy and accidentally breaking a bowl. It is not until the grandson makes the parents realize that they will be like the old man one day, that they start treating him better. In Abuelito who it is implied that the granddaughter is told not to open the grandfather's door because he can't come outside to play and he is sick. The grandson in the folk tale made the parents realize that they would be as old as the grandpa and the granddaughter cared about the elderly grandfather in the poem.
