Academic Public Discourse
English essay

"Guidelines for Academic and Public Discourse: Expectations for Individual/Class Conduct" is a brief description of Dr. Tremblay's goals and expectations for each of the students in his class. Being one of those students, I have read this syllabus and come up with my own understanding of his ideas.

I noted that one of the most important points throughout this reading was that time spent in class should be maximized. Basically, the work you put in will be reflective of how well you succeed in this class. If you fool around and wait until the last minute to complete assignments, chances are you won't be very successful.

Distractions are another important topic that was brought up. You should silence all phones, watches, laptops...etc.

Chapter 3 was about managing time. As students, we need to figure out where are time goes because we need to determine if it’s even going to the right activities that we do. We may not realize that habits of doing certain things at certain times are affecting our work. Therefore, we need to start prioritizing what needs to be done for our own good. In this case, its class work so we need to set up a schedule for ourselves that will help us manage our time much better and be more successful. The amount of energy we have when we do work affects it completely be it negative or positive. As students, we should know what brings us up and what brings us down and should get ourselves to the energy level that will help us better focus on the task at hand. We also tend to study for long periods of time without many breaks because of something that could be due the next day. In this chapter, it suggests that we study throughout the day so we wouldn’t have to deal with everything all at once, but instead piece by piece so we don’t stress out about much whenever it comes close to the time of taking it. procrastinating and distractions are also issues that we deal with and need to learn how to control what goes on around us. If we know certain things will distract us from our work, we should get in the habit of avoiding them or finding a place that we know we can completely focus on our work. Towards the end of the chapter, it talks about how to juggle family, school, and job responsibilities. It all comes down to scheduling our life to the point where we know exactly how much time each task requires and establish an efficient schedule so we do not worry about having sufficient time for each one.…

Through the last nine weeks this class and my experiences have taught me so much about how to prepare myself for my future not only in my college courses but in my career path too. I started this path not really knowing what to expect but in desperate need for a change in my life. In all reality I didn’t realize how unprepared I actually was. This course imp articular taught me so much! I learned how to set goals for myself so that I could stay motivated and be able to visually see my completion of each goal. You separate your goals into short term and long term so that you can effectively schedule your tasks at hand in the correct order to accomplish all of your goals. When I realized that I had a fear of failing I was also directed in this course to learn how to overcome procrastination. It is easy to be motivated in this learning environment by reading the stories and opinions of the other students here. The more motivated you are the less you procrastinate! Managing my time was definitely one of the hugest struggles for me through this experience so I was thankful that this topic was covered so thoroughly in the past weeks. I actually am starting to enjoy making the calendar for each week that organizes the lives of my daughter and I. Another lesson that goes hand in hand with time management is creating an effective learning and study environment. It’s so important to be able to get the absolute most out of every minute of your time. To do this I’ve found that when studying you need to be able to focus yourself on nothing other than your schoolwork and assignments on hand. With all of the things I have learned by my experiences in the past few weeks I feel more confident about my pursuit in my career goals. I feel this has set me up to succeed. I have been able to learn how to think outside the box and be independent in my decision making process.…

2.) “Do Less/Work Faster-Your time is your responsibility. Take control of your time so you can take control of your life” (p. 70). By being a teacher it always seems as though there is not enough time to do what is expected of us in the hours that we are in school. I know I sometimes bring work home just so I won’t get behind. I could see how finding small increments of time could help me work faster and I could have more time to teach and to tutor my students.…

Research shows that student performance inside the classroom and on the report card is greatly weighted on the attendance of the student. Several studies show that the most valuable and important time commitment in a course was the time actually spent in the classroom.(Schiming) Some other valuable and important time commitments included the time spent in discussion sections that complemented the lectures, and the time spent studying outside of class preparing for the class itself.(Schiming) That study concluded that the most productive time spent in any course was in the classroom; and that time had the greatest positive impact on the students’ performance. Another study of similar motives was taken on the most significant activities the impacted the students’ performance in any given course. The results of that study showed the idea that the most important learning takes place in the classroom and that students who do a conscientious job on a daily basis preparing for and participating in class perform better than students who skip class and try to cram for exams.(Schiming) The study of class attendance in correlation with student grades was also statistically…
