During my court visits at Croydon Magistrates Court, I witnessed the application of criminal law in cases relating to theft and robbery. I am eager to learn what the statutory and legal difference is between theft and robbery, as well as understanding the remedies available. Whilst visiting the Supreme Court, I sat in cases relating to European and international law. I was impressed by how barristers were suggesting their interpretations on the law. Studying law will allow me to understand the reasoning behind courts’ decisions, provide an opportunity to question legal precedence, and, ultimately, aid me in developing my legal skills which are crucial in my pursuit in a legal career. …show more content…
Through my legal placement at the global management investment firm, Artisan Partners, I demonstrate my ability to grasp ideas and absorb information quickly.
I was introduced to the day-to-day activities of a solicitor and gained an understanding of contractual agreements in business. Also, I received first-hand experience with the Compliance Manager, with whom I discussed the legal hazards and regulations created by the Financial Conduct Authority with regard to raising financial capital through the stock market. This placement has given me the chance to observe contract law in practice whilst becoming familiar with business terms and legal
jargon.
Furthermore, I was offered a position on the National Citizen Service, in which I worked together with team members in creating the campaign ‘Voice of the Youth’, primarily aimed at raising awareness on and highlighting the importance of voting for the general elections. Through winning two rounds of a debate on lowering the legal voting age to attract and involve the younger generation, I demonstrate my ability to achieve success, passion to question and analyse the law, and persistence to push my boundaries. Also, this fantastic opportunity allowed me to put my knowledge on government policies into practice, conduct in-depth research in a timely manner, and polish my analytical skills whilst thinking on my feet.
Through studying Sociology, I am able to accurately compare cause and effect relationships between two theories. I strongly believe that this will be beneficial when analysing legal issues in problem questions. Also, I have a thorough understanding of cross-cultural differences which will help me create different point of views in discussing the impact of law in our society. In studying English Literature, I developed the skill to extrapolate relevant details, context, and interpretations of various critics on poems and fictional texts.
In addition to my professional experiences and alongside my studies, I have enrolled myself in law taster courses to enrich my knowledge on law. I became a mentor to three GCSE students, and volunteered for the Jason Roberts Foundation. I also attend the HSLA programme to organize and teach badminton sessions for children to encourage the importance of exercising. As a competitive badminton player, I have excellent focus, commitment and dedication. I truly believe that my skills and interests highlighted make me the ideal candidate to form a well-rounded University law student.
