Acetaminophen Synthesis Lab Report
Conclusion:
The purpose of the Acetaminophen synthesis experiment was to verify that the synthesis process did proceed acetaminophen. Refluxing a combination of acetic anhydride and p-aminophenol created acetaminophen when it was isolated from the mixture. Filtration and centrifuging the product ensure purification of the product. The pure product had 167.7-169.8℃ melting range and 22.4% yield. It also exhibited all the functional group of Acetaminophen. Despite the low yield, the experiment was successful.

The purpose of this experiment was to create and obtain pure acetaminophen. p-aminophenol and acetic anhydride were used to create acetaminophen and acetic acid. The acetic acid mixed with acetaminophen created an impure sample, which was purified through the addition of a water/methanol solution. The percent recovery of acetaminophen from the impure sample to the pure sample was 76%. The melting point of the pure sample was 167C - 169C.…

All the reagents and solvents used for synthesizing the title compound were of Analar grade (Merck) and were used as such without further purification. The 2-naphthol derived Mannich base 1-((4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)(phenyl)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol (MPN) was synthesized according to the general procedure described in the literatures [13, 14]. The 2-naphthol (4.33 g, 0.03 mol) was dissolved in 30ml of ethanol and it was mixed with…

To be able to understand how organic soluble compounds could be isolated from non-organic components, a chromatographic separation process was used. The objective of the analgesic drug identification is to isolate the organic compounds/ active ingredients in an unknown drug. The identity of the drug was determined through melting point, percent recover, and Rf values. The comparable data for acetaminophen from the manufacturer is 500mg of active ingredient. After conducting the experiment-extraction, distillation, and evaporation- 451mg of active ingredient. This relates to a 68.1% recovery. The melting point was between 158 and 165 degrees Celsius, which is almost ten degrees lower than the published melting point of acetaminophen. After conducting a TLC plate, the Rf value was calculated to be .4268, the same as the standard Rf.…

Acetaminaphen was crushed then extracted for the active ingredient by mixing it with methanol. Then separated from the binders by centrifugation and a filtration technique using a Pasteur pipet packed with alumina. The remaining solvent was then evaporated to yield the solid analgesic(.2295g, 45.9% yield) which was collected by filtration and tested for the purity of the drug by the melting point determination. The melting point was (135-142 C) compared to the literature melting point values for acetaminophen (169-171 C) the lower melting point show that their were still impurities in the isolated ingredient.…

Acetaminophen is a common analgesic used to treat mild pain. We synthesized acetaminophen by reacting p-aminophenol and acetic anhydride. The amine group on the p-aminophenol reacted with the center oxygen atom on the acetic anhydride to form an amide. We reacted 0.210g of p-aminophenol with 0.240ml of acetic anhydride in the presence of heat, and then cooled the solution in an ice bath until crystals formed. The solid acetaminophen was filtered from the solution and then subjected to a recrystallization using a 50:50 water-ethanol solvent. 0.1484g of crude acetaminophen was measured and after purification 0.0669g of pure acetaminophen was collected. A percent yield of 23% was calculated from our theoretical and actual yield. The melting point…

In order to first perform the reaction, 1.5 mL of 4-methylcyclohexanol was added to a pre-weighed 5mL conical vial. The conical vial was then weighed to find the actual mass of 4-methylcycloheaxanol. Then, 0.4mL of 85% phosphoric acid was added to the conical vial using a plastic pipet. Six drops of concentrated sulfuric acid was then added to the vial using a glass pipet. A spin vane was then added before adding the Hickman head, water condenser and a drying tube packed with calcium chloride to the conical vial.…

The goal of this lab is to synthesize a sample of acetylsalicylic acid, otherwise known as aspirin. This is the most important goal of the lab. This, however, has side goals that go along with the main one. One is finding the percent yield of the synthesis. Another is measuring the melting point of the aspirin sample, which will in turn indicate the purity of the sample. The last is conducting a colorimetric analysis on the aspirin sample.…

We found the Rf value by the distance spot travels divided by the distance the solvent travels. From the TLC samples collected, the solvent travels to be 7.7 cm and the distance the spot travels from aspirin, acetaminophen, ascorbic acid, and unknown to be 7.0 cm, 7.7 cm, 7.6 cm, and 7.5 cm respectively. Since the two…

Aspirin and Tylenol were synthesized by means of crystallization, recrystallization, and melting point determination. Synthesis produced significantly high percent yields for aspirin, however, produced extremely low and impure percent yields for Tylenol. A second group was also used to compare results and errors, in which they too were also producing extremely low percent yields of Tylenol. Therefore, error was based on the specific protocol used.…

This experiment was designed to prepare and purify isopentyl acetate, often known as banana oil due to the familiar odor of the fruit, via Fischer esterification. Steps taken were direct esterification of acetic acid with isopentyl alcohol and simple distillation to obtain pure isopentyl acetate. The equilibrium reaction does not favor the formation of the ester; therefore, the reaction must be shifted to the right in favor of the product. To achieve this, Le Chatelier’s Principle was used to force the reaction to take place as it was a reversible equilibrium reaction.…

Our data displayed supports the notion that by increasing the acidity of the catalyst, the production of aspirin will increase. Our hypothesis was proven correct. In our data, we calculated the percent yield and percent error of each trial. We also calculated the average of the percent yields and the percent errors of each catalyst. In the end, we saw that for the sulphuric acid catalyzed aspirin, we saw an average of 69.7% percent yield and an average 30.3% percent error.…

The objective of this experiment was the synthesis of Isopentyl Acetate using an esterification reaction between acetic acid and Isopentyl Alcohol, using a strong acid as a catalyst. The product was washed, and distilled. This approach is called Fisher esterification, whereby esters are produced by the esterification of a Carboxylic acid where it is heated with an alcohol in the presence of a strong acid which acts as a catalyst. The ester produced had a banana flavor.…

Paracetamol (N- (4- hydroxyphenyl) ethanamide) or acetaminophen is a widely used analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer). It is a relatively safe drug though toxicity has been observed with very high doses.1 according to the British Pharmacopeia (BP) 111 paracetamol should contain between 95.0%- 105.0% of the stated product.2 It can be synthesised by reacting 4-aminophenol in acetic anhydride and this is often the first stage of preparing a medicine. This experiment aims to prepare a sample of paracetamol and assess its quality and purity as this need to be checked before it can be formulated into a medicine.…
