Achilles Tendon Rupture
An Achilles tendon rupture affects the back of the lower leg and most commonly occurs by overstretching the tendon during recreational sports. The Achilles tendon is a strong fibrous cord that connects the muscles in the back of your calf to your heel bone. The function of the Achilles tendon is to help raise your heel, push up the toes, and lifting the rear of the heel. Without an intact Achilles tendon, almost any motion with the ankle is difficult. The tendon is critical for function while jumping, running, standing, and climbing stairs.
The mechanisms of injury for an Achilles tendon rupture include: sudden forced plantar flexion, unexpected dorsiflexion of the foot, and violent dorsiflexion of a plantar flexed foot. Direct force trauma

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the two cruciate ligaments of the knee, the other being the Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL). These ligaments are the stabilizers of the knee. The ACL is a strip of fiber tissue, which is located deep inside the knee joint. It runs from the posterior side of the femur (thigh bone) to the anterior side of the tibia (shin bone) deep inside of the knee. The ligament is a broad, thick cord the size of a person 's index finger. It has long collagen strands woven together in a fashion that permits forces of up to 500 pounds to be exerted. The function of the ACL is to prevent the tibia from moving in front of the knee and femur. The ACL also prevents hyperextension (or extreme stretching of the knee backward) and helps to prevent rotation of the tibia.…

Football players may encounter two possible injury scenarios for ankle syndesmotic injuries. One involves a direct blow to the lateral leg, causing internal rotation of the leg, while the foot remains fixed on the ground in relative external rotation. The second injury scenario involves a blow to the lateral knee, with the foot planted in external rotation and the body rotated internally. Both situations force a widening of the ankle mortise and rupture of the ligamentous structures responsible for stabilizing the distal syndesmotic articulation.…

The ankles are a very important part of the human body. They are a multifaceted supporting structure that can cause incapacity and absence from regular daily activity if injured. The tibiofibular joint ligaments of the foot permit stabilization of the forward motion. Complications can become grounds for arthritis, loose body formation and instability. The sprain of the ankle is quite common in many contact sports but also in normal daily activities. Ankle sprains are linked with and known to be common in sports like soccer, football, basketball, volleyball and sprinting. An anterior cruciate ligament injury also referred as an ACL injury “caused by a sudden deceleration or landing maneuver with the leg in a vulnerable position” tearing the anterior cruciate ligament. There are three major bones that meet to form your knee joint known as the femur (thighbone), tibia (shinbone), and kneecap (patella). These bones are then connected to each other by ligaments that act as strong ropes in order to hold the bones together and stabilize the knee. One of these ligaments is the anterior cruciate that is located in the middle of the knee in the form of a “X” in front of the posterior cruciate ligament in the back. The role of the anterior cruciate is to prevent the kneecap from sliding in front of the thighbone,…

I can remember when I did my undergrad internship at a rehabilitation center; the Physical Therapist explained to me that if a person has ruptured their Achilles tendon, calf raises were one the best exercises. This exercise was potentially one of the best due to it strengthening the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. He also explained that many runners should focus on strengthening exercises, simply because of the wear and tear running they are more susceptible to this type of injury.…

The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is one of four major knee ligaments. The ACL is critical to knee stability, and people who injure their ACL often complain of symptoms of their knee giving-out from under them. Therefore, many patients who sustain an ACL tear opt to have surgical treatment of this injury. An ACL tear is most often a sports-related injury. ACL tears can also occur during rough play, mover vehicle collisions, falls, and work-related injuries. About 80% of sports-related ACL tears are "non-contact" injuries. This means that the injury occurs without the contact of another athlete, such as a tackle in football. Most often ACL tears occur when pivoting or landing…

Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries. Sprains are injuries to the ligaments of the ankle, causing them to tear from sudden stretching. A sprain can happen on either or both of the inner and outer portions of the ankle. The typical injury occurs when the ankle is suddenly "twisted" in a sports activity or by stepping off an uneven surface. The pain is initially severe and can be associated with a "popping" feeling. Immediate swelling happens as the injured blood vessels leak fluids. You will feel severe pain when the ankle is moved. Sprains…

Coming up on the ASAA Track and Field championships, I developed achilles tendonitis which inevitably ruined my high school running career. I couldn’t believe that me of all people had gotten injured. I was very involved with injury prevention and performed strengthening exercises, stretches, made safe decisions, and had very a very healthy diet on a daily basis. Over the next eighteen months I visited over six different experts who claimed that they recognized my injury and knew how to treat it. After nearly three months without any noticeable improvement I began to conduct my own research and try to correct my problem myself. I developed a keen interest in the field of rehabilitation and the many mysteries that the body held. When the time…
