Lindsey Hunter – Smillie
“Othello”– Act 4, Scene 3
Character - Emilia
Analysis of text in relation to character
The piece is written in traditional Shakespearian language. We looked up words to work out what the characters were saying. Emilia is interested in learning about Desdemona’s relationship but is wary about saying exactly how she feels in case she hurts her. She gets irritated however when she is told Othello wanted Desdemona to dismiss her and tells Desdemona that she wishes she had never seen Othello. Emilia then realises she has offended Desdemona and quickly changes the topic. When the two women begin speaking about Lodovico and cheating, Emilia starts opening up more about her feelings and trying to educate and convince Desdemona cheating is not a bad thing and that loads of women do it. Desdemona disagrees entirely.
