Positive and negative effects of winning the lottery

Winning the lottery is something everyone wants. Rarely do people realize that there are also bad effects to having such a large sum of money. A good amount of people that win the lottery are foolish with their money, quit their jobs, or just don’t know what to do with it. The others that win make smart decisions in either investing their fortune, donating it to a good cause, or just helping their family be finically stable.
Majority of people think that a large amount of money makes life much more easier, which is true, but sometimes there are also difficulties. After the winners buy everything that had wanted they wonder what else there is to buy. Some winners are over whelmed with the large sum of money and decide to spend it on drugs. They figure that if they have the money why not spend it, but they don’t realize that the drug can be addicting. After a certain amount of time the winner will notice that all of his fortune has been wasted on a drug that wasted away their body. Their money ends up being gone and they end up being broke with an addiction.
A positive effect from winning the lottery would be less stress with their families finical problems. The economy today is making it hard for people to get jobs, keep their jobs, and commute to work. For an average family many are cutting back on things that aren’t needed such as going out to eat and family day trips. The lottery could help out a family like this in a great way. The family could put money away for their kids to go to college, pay off debts, and maybe even have an early retirement.
Another great deed to share their fortune with would be donating it to a good cause. The winner doesn’t have to donate all of their fortune to the charity, but anything does make a difference. There are still many cures doctors are looking for today, such as the cure for cancer and the cure for aids. Donating their money could help doctors be one step closer to

You wouldn’t think anything was wrong at the beginning of the story. It takes place in a small village. Everyone seems to be excited about the lottery, because everyone is present for the lottery. All the characters in the story seem to get along well. Everyone in the town gathers for the lottery. All the children are gathering rocks. This rock collecting didn’t seem to make sense until later. The lottery takes place by having each man or head of household draw a piece of paper out of a black box. The man that draws the black dot then has to have their family members…

Let us take the Watson family as an example. The head of the Watson household, Mr. Watson, was the “lucky” winner in the past lottery. Since then, Mrs. Watson still grieves and mourns for the death of her husband. Jack Watson, their son, currently draws for their household. If ever the Watson family is chosen again, either Jack or Mrs. Watson will face death. Loneliness can drive an individual to suicidal thoughts and actions just to be reunited once more with their lost loved ones. The lottery has tremendously impacted families. You would be oblivious to this fact of course because for a lucky man like you, you aren’t included in the black, death box. This reason is why we are sorry for you. For not being able to feel the pain that this lottery has caused us. Though let us put this in a business perspective so you can better understand. Killing individuals would lessen the amount of workers in our village. Less workers means a smaller economy and a bad reputation. As a man who is devoted to his civic duties, I wouldn’t want to be known as the man who encourages breaking families with a piece of paper and…

To begin with, both stories share the same setting. They both take place back in the earlier days, where the dollar had a high value. In the “The Lottery Ticket” Ivan Dmitritch was earning approximately a monthly earning of one hundred dollars and was living normally. “Ivan Dmitritch, a middle-classed man who lived with his family on an income of twelve hundred a year and was very well satisfied with his lot.” (Chekhov, P.199). Also the prize for the winning lottery was seventy-five thousand dollars; Ivan and his wife were stating how it could allow them many things. “The ticket is yours, but if it were mine I should, first of all, of course, spend thousands on immediate expenses, new furnishings...travelling...paying debts, and so on... The other forty thousand I would put in the bank and get interest on it.” In the short fiction story “Rich for One Day” Aline considered herself to be rich and having a fortune with only eight…

Money--it seems to be able to provide anything the heart desires. But, in reality, money can never produce true satisfaction and will eventually destroy its holder. D.H. Lawrence's "The Rocking-Horse Winner" (rpt in Thomas R. Arp and Greg Johnson, Perrine's Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 8th ed. [Fort Worth: Harcourt, 2002] 302) describes a "poor" family with very expensive taste that never seems to gain satisfaction. Their house silently whispers "There must be more money!" (303), implying that to be happy, this family must obtain more riches. The little boy in the story, Paul, tries to silence the whisperings and give his family some peace of mind because he is supposedly "lucky." However his plan proves unsuccessful and eventually leads to his death and the end of his "luck."…

The majority of gamblers do not gamble for the money; they do it for the enjoyment of the sport. To some people it is a stress reliever; to others it is a fun activity to do in their spare time. For example, when an adult scratches away at the selected spots on their ticket with their lucky penny they are finding pleasure in its activity. Some individuals, majority being elders, are incapable of participating in physical sports. Physical sports bring competition, thrill, and exhilaration to those who play them. When an individual is unable to participate they commonly lose the feelings that come along with the activities. Lotteries have the ability to reestablish these feelings of excitement and enjoyment for those who are incapable of finding their enjoyment elsewhere. In addition to providing enjoyment, lotteries strengthen hope for hopeless individuals as well.…

If we would take away the lottery it would take away from the retired people who the lottery money goes to as well. I don't like to know that the money is going to them, I rather see the state invest into the future instead of wasting money away on the past. Either way the lottery does help out certain people. "If nobody ever won the lottery, then nobody would play it. The public appreciates that the odds against them are very high indeed, but the purchase of a ticket gives them a chance of a fortune, however remote, and the opportunity to dream of a different life. As other forms of gambling are legal, along with many other ways of harmlessly but enjoyably wasting money, there is nothing wrong with the government benefitting from the pursuit."The odds against the common man are very great, so to them to have a real chance at overcoming everything in life with a purchase of a one dollar power ball ticket is worth it.…
