Assessment 2

There are many types of condition which can affect a child’s development. Three of these groups are physical conditions, which are conditions which mainly affect physical development, medical conditions, which are conditions which need to be maintained or treated, and developmental disorders, which are conditions which affect one or more aspects of development. Children suffering from a condition from any of these groups can have long term needs and short term needs.

The child may have to visit a speech therapist to help with their communication problems, and an occupational therapist to help increase the child’s ability in everyday tasks involving fine motor skills. Clothes which are easier to put on and take off would help the child be more independent when dressing and would include Velcro instead of laces, and larger buttons or zips. Teachers could help a child with dyspraxia by explaining some concepts more clearly, repeating instructions and checking that the resources used are suitable for the abilities of the child. Short term needs may occur before the child has been diagnosed with the condition and when the child becomes frustrated as a result of being unable to carry out a task. Before the child is diagnosed, he or she needs to be assessed. Assessing the child fulfils a short term need, because its result enables family and education workers to work out how to manage the situation properly. When the child cannot do something he or she wants to do and becomes frustrated. At this time, an adult would need to know how to react to the behaviour displayed at this time so that they can help the child to calm down or, if need be, help the child to complete the

    There are many influences which can affect a child’s development, personal factors include influences before and at birth, health status and disabilities, sensory impairments and learning difficulties. Genetics affect a child’s development at conception where the sperm and egg determine sex, height and eye colour. If the genetics are faulty this can affect the child’s health and development. During pregnancy the mother needs to ensure that she does not smoke, drink or use drugs, all of these things are made up of toxins which can severely harm the baby which in turn can cause complications at birth and possible delayed development later on in life. Difficulties throughout the labour such as anoxia (lack of oxygen) can cause difficulties for development. If a child is born with a condition or develops one later on in life this may affect their development. For example, a child with uncontrolled asthma or cystic fibrosis may not be able to run around and be as active as their peers. Therefore, this would mean that their physical development might not be the same, not being able to play outside would almost certainly affect their social development, as children make many friendships on the playground and at after school clubs. A child in a wheelchair or with a serious physical impairment would find it hard to do many activities, particularity those that are physically demanding. Gross motor skills would be at a less developed rate than peers and fine motor skills may be affected if the child had little or no control over their limbs.     Muscular dystrophy, MD, is a group of inherited muscle diseases that weaken the muscles that help the body move (Clark, 1995). There are nine major forms of MD. These are Myotonic, Duchenne, Becker, Limb-girdle, Facioscapulohumeral, Congenital, Oculopharyngeal, Distal, and Emery-Dreifuss (Wikipedia contributors, 2009). The type of disease is based on a few factors which are as follows: when in a person’s life MD appears, the degree to which the muscle is affected, how the disease came about, and the rate at which the symptom progresses. The cause of MD is linked to defects in certain genes and is determined by which gene is defective. This disease is inherited. In rare cases, muscular dystrophies aren’t inherited and occur because of a new gene abnormality or mutation (WebMD, 2005). The symptoms of the diseases vary depending on the type of MD. The main symptoms are progressive muscular wasting, poor balance, frequent falls, walking difficulty, waddling gait, calf pain, limited range of movement, respiratory difficulty, drooping eyelids (ptosis), gondal atrophy, scoliosis and finally the inability to walk (Wikipedia contributors, 2009). Symptoms are not always present for diagnosis. Often the disease is diagnosed based on the results of a muscle biopsy. Sometimes all that is needed for diagnosis is a DNA blood test. There is no cure for any of the muscular dystrophies (WebMD, 2005). However, there are forms of therapy that reduce the muscle degeneration caused by MD. The therapies also vary depending on the type of MD. Some of the forms of helpful therapy include the following: Physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthotic intervention, speech therapy, and orthopedic instruments (Wikipedia contributors, 2009).…
