Adeline Yen Mah
“...transcend your abuse and transform it into a source of courage, creativity, and compassion.” (Yen Mah xii). Later in Adeline Yen Mah’s life, she learned that she could turn all of her hurt and abuse into bravery. In her childhood, Adeline was unwanted and lonely. Adeline was mostly lonely at home.

Adeline’s self esteem was very low, and she even wrote down the word “nothing” as what her best quality was. Being an unwanted child certainly played a role in her low self esteem. For example, “I’m afraid I've forgotten your Chinese name. Is it Jun-quing?” (Yen Mah 124). To begin, Adeline’s father had forgotten his own daughter’s name. This shows how she was barely noticed by her own family. Another example, “We’ll find you an orphanage that will take you in until you’re old enough to find a job to support yourself. Your

The only people who were close with her were Aunt Baba and Ye Ye. Adeline was never visited by any of her family members at Sacred Heart. For example, “Since no one had ever come to visit me (let alone brought me an egg), it was humiliating to sit there morning after morning looking on, knowing my number would never come up.” (Yen Mah 163). Adeline spent all of her years at Sacred Heart not once ever getting an egg from her family. She spent a lonely two years at Sacred Heart never receiving an egg, until one day when a girl gave hers to Adeline. Another reason why Adeline was lonely was she was never allowed to have any friends over at her house, or go over to their houses. For example, “Go downstairs this minute and tell your hooligan friends to get out! They are not welcome!” (Yen Mah 115). Adeline was slapped by Niang because she had friends over without knowing it. Adeline was never allowed to have friends over at her house, which caused her to not have too many friends. In conclusion, Adeline had very few friends and close family members, which caused her to have a lonely

The Murder case of Hae Min Lee is a flawed one, it lacks not only physical evidence, but a good reasoning on why they thought Adnan Syed killed his ex-girlfriend. This case gained only local interest until in 2014 Sarah Koenig who created a podcast called, “Serial” , where she did years of research to try, and find the truth but she came to a lot of dead ends. The information only led to more questions about the case. I believe Adnan Syed is innocent, and there was never a good of enough reason for him to be charged with the murder. I will go over why I stand by his innocence, and the fault in the evidence that was brought up during the trial that led to his ultimate conviction.…

Ye Ye is one of the reasons why Adeline was able to succeed. Adeline’s grandfather stated, “‘I ordered the maids to set up a cot in my room at once. While Niang is in this euphoric mood, quickly unpack your bag and settle in before she changes her mind about your staying here’”(Yen Mah 148). Ye Ye loves Wu Mei so much that he sacrifices part of his room for her. He also went behind…

“I almost screamed out in terror but bit my lip and remained silent for the rest of my punishment”(Yen Mah pg. 104). This is important because it tells that Father also abused Adeline along with Niang. “He ordered me to lie face down on my bed and whipped me”(Yen Mah pg.104). This will tell the reader that Father is very ruthless. The reason Father whipped her was because Adeline didn't tell him about the party or the silver dollar. This is depressing because whipping someone is wrong even in those days. She didn't deserve this punishment.…

“Every day every hour. Turn the pain into power.” Danny O’Donoghue, a vocalist member of the band The Script, sings in “Superheroes” about the strength that comes with overcoming the struggles presented in life; similarly this message can be seen in Ishmael Beah’s recount of the challenges he faced as a victim of war, A Long Way Gone. To me, the song is a reminder of how difficulties can build someone into a stronger person. Throughout the song, all the lyrics hint that without suffer and perseverance, success cannot be achieved. Similarly, in Beah’s story, he becomes a teenager with more fortitude only after breaking down and experiencing immense grief and pain both physically and mentally. From listening to and analyzing “Superheroes” and reading A Long Way Gone, I learn that only after breaking down and…
