Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone
“Every day every hour. Turn the pain into power.” Danny O’Donoghue, a vocalist member of the band The Script, sings in “Superheroes” about the strength that comes with overcoming the struggles presented in life; similarly this message can be seen in Ishmael Beah’s recount of the challenges he faced as a victim of war, A Long Way Gone. To me, the song is a reminder of how difficulties can build someone into a stronger person. Throughout the song, all the lyrics hint that without suffer and perseverance, success cannot be achieved. Similarly, in Beah’s story, he becomes a teenager with more fortitude only after breaking down and experiencing immense grief and pain both physically and mentally. From listening to and analyzing “Superheroes” and reading A Long Way Gone, I learn that only after breaking down and …show more content…
In the verse, “All his life he's been told he'll be nothing when he's old,” The Script sings about the struggle of frustration of being looked down on and verbally put down. The next line, “All the kicks and all the blows, he won't ever let it show,” shows the physical pain of being tormented as well as the mental struggle of staying rigid and keeping it all in. “‘Cause he’s stronger than you know, a heart of steel starts to grow,” describes becoming stronger through proving others wrong and developing a more powerful endurance so others no longer have the courage to bully. The heart of steel mentioned is a metaphor for breaking down and rebuilding a stronger base. In the chorus, “When you've been fighting for it all your life, you've been struggling to make things right; that's how a superhero learns to fly,” the first two phrases refer to only being able to grow by grappling and fighting with the challenges at first. The superhero learning to fly that is mentioned at the end refers to someone becoming more strong-minded because of these

The story told by Ishmael Beah in A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier is an amazing recollection of the effects that the extreme violence of war can have on a person, including physical, psychological, and social trauma, in which a boy tries to survive and escape his past as a child soldier. Civil war brings along not only violence, sadness, poverty, death etc. but also horrible conditions in which the victims that suffer the consequences are the children. Kids in third world countries, like in Sierra Leone, that are going through civil wars are forced to join the fight in order to survive; it’s the only option they have. Everyone in the world can testify to their trials and tribulations but they are exactly what morphs and shapes us into who we are. The weak succumb to the poison and destroy themselves, but the strong understand eventually that where you come from and what you have been through does not define you. It is an individual choice you make to lay down and die or stand up and make something of yourself. Kari Patterson understood that. Since she was a little girl, she represented hope for a better tomorrow. Continuous negative events in her life was like putting black food coloring in hydrogen peroxide. Tina Mabry’s one solid message to the world is, “there are always options when you think there are…

Helen Keller once said that “although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.” This quote means that there is more to life than negativity, there is also a sense of accomplishment over such negative things. Such triumph can only be accomplished after the fact of the occurrence of a negative event. Two books that support this are Lord of the Flies, and Night. In “Lord of the Flies” the boys on the island must overcome evil and savagery in order to survive. In Ellie Wiesel’s Night, the protagonist, Ellie, faces the troubles of the Nazi concentration camps, loses his faith in God, but survives the horrific event.…

Child soldiers often have a hard time returning to a normal life after war. Ishmael Beah, however, showed that he can do it and so can others. He lost his entire family in Sierra Leone’s civil war and the government recruited him as a soldier in his early teens and went on to write his memoir about it, A Long Way Gone. As hard as it was for him to go through and relive these memories to write his story, people still question the memoir’s validity. Despite what many articles say, Beah’s story is true.…

There are many problems in the world, children who suffer from any diseases and/ or are taken away from their families but there is so much more to it. Ishmael Beah was a young boy when captured to become a child soldier. His story is just one out of the million others out there; he became a voice to the ones unheard. Beah’s childhood was taken away, as well as his innocence. He would no longer do the things he enjoyed and spend his time playing with friends. Sometimes life has many bumps along the way, but this wasn’t just a bump, it was something he’d have to live with forever. The things we all experience make us who we are.…

Kanye West’s 2007 hit song, “Stronger” uses Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger”. In his novel, The Happiness Hypothesis, Jonathan Haidt states his hypothesis that people must endure all the hardships of life in order to grow in all aspects. I agree with both Nietzsche and Haidt that through perseverance of all difficulties that occur in life, we can develop a stronger physical, social, mental, and emotional state. I find Haidt’s suggestion interesting because many hardships I have endured and am continuing to endure, prove his suggestion valid.…

The lyrics of the pop song, “Stronger”, by Kelly Clarkson, is highly significant because of its empowering message. The lyrics allow listeners to feel confident about being strong no matter what or who may try to bring someone down, even if it were their own mistakes. To convey this message, Clarkson used many literary devices. For example, in lines like, “What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, Stand a little taller” there is external rhyme, which makes the song more pleasurable to the ears. Its chorus, “What doesn't kill you makes you stronger” is a metaphor, that refers to the fact the previous mistakes and people that hurt one’s feelings, should making them stronger. The theme of these lyrics is that there needs to be growth…

I have had to work harder than ever to get back to where I wanted to be. When Kanye sings, “if i ain't on my grind, then what you call that,” it symbolizes how hard Kanye has worked to be where he is right now. This can represent the pain and suffering I had to endure at physical therapy in order to be able to play sports at a higher level than before my injury. One of the “moral of the story” in “The Old Man and the Sea” is persistence. As we remember, Santiago went for about 80 days without catching a single fish. Even though many of us would have quit, Santiago stayed strong. Because of this, he was able to catch the huge marlin. I can relate to this because I will be unable to play sports for 9-12 months. While quitting sports all together could have been an option, I have only worked harder to get better. Although there were struggles associated with the injury, it allowed me to focus on one thing:…
