Who Are Adjunct Professors and What They Do?

Adjunct professors are instructors hired by high schools, colleges or universities on a part-time basis and with the help of contract. These professors do not have a defined tenure and often have to work on low wages as compared to professors working full time.

Who are adjunct professors?
Adjunct professors have the job of teaching students just like tenure track professors, but they get exemption in some responsibilities. The roles of these professors is expanding in the education sector due to budget constraints in the institutions. This position also gives an opportunity to individuals wanting to make a career in this field.

Why are adjunct professors required?
Colleges and other educational institutions need instructors to ensure food teaching faculty for students. Full time professors often demand high salaries and other benefits while accepting a job offer. These are often in the form of health insurance and other such benefits. As these professors are entitled to a part-time role, they are often expected to be flexible and handle various duties apart from teaching. Adjunct professors spend most of their time educating students and rarely have their own separate cabins within the institution premises. In addition to teaching the course subject, these instructors also handle others tasks like

Creating, distributing and reviewing the course syllabus
Ensuring that the class syllabus meets the university standard for the subject
Planning and preparing classroom lectures, discussions and creating assignments on the topic
Making use of various instructional strategies to ensure quality education
Assessing students performance on assignments, exams and quizzes
Grading students performance in class, examinations and assignments
Maintaining records for attendance, involvement in class and progress for each
