Answers: As an account lecturer perspective.
(A). Roles and responsibilities: An effective teacher understands that teaching involves wearing multiple hats to ensure that the school day runs smoothly and all students receive a quality education (Stacy Zeiger, 2000). The roles and responsibilities of a teacher/lecturer can be a complex one. We are charged with ensuring learners gain their qualifications in a manner which is favourable …show more content…
to their own learning needs and those of the awarding bodies.
At the ‘Planning and Design’ stage as a lecturer, I play multiple roles. I am also a learner, constantly taking sessions with learners and attending professional development session to learn the latest best practices and strategies for more effective teaching. My planning includes the course syllabus, hand outs, scheme of work, session plans, pass examination questions, assignments and other activities enhance my learners. For example I ensure to arrive at the college on time to pick up my course manual provided by the external body and other materials to be used throughout the course period. My session plan includes different activities which will use to help my learners. For example, for each sessions prepared for my learners I get related pass examination questions for practice as group work, in tutorial or individual. This will enhance my learners understanding and also what kind of questions to be expected in their external examination. In my session plan, I include a ten minutes icebreaker at the appropriate time and given necessary break to learners which will help my learners to relax and interact. I ensure to arrive early for my lesson to set up necessary equipment like laptop, projector and obtain other resources like textbooks, maker pens and learner’s register I will be using before my session start or my learners arrives.
At the ‘Delivery’ stage, I treat each of my learners as an individual so I can understand and recognize each person prefers different learning styles and techniques. There are four main categories of learning which are visual, auditory, read- write and kinaesthetic. As a teacher/lecturer, once I know where my learners prefer learning styles lie, I will corporate them in all my resources (hand out, books etc), activities and methods of delivery used will provide in details for different learning styles. By understanding different learners learning styles and in corporate them will help me to create an environment in which everyone can learn effectively and build stronger communication process. As a teacher/ lecturer, after introducing the lesson aims and objectives to learners I then recap the previous lesson if necessary with them in order to refresh their knowledge. For example most of accounting topics are interwoven so recap of previous session always help new learners in the class. In order to maintain quality and effective teaching, I deploy different learning approaches, resources and activities with my learners like organising group work which different topics for each group will be given and they will give a presentation to other learners, group discussion within the session which allows all learners to participate by treating pass examination questions, give them more confident in the course and gain more knowledge from others. Sometimes, I give my learners assignment which involves making research using the ICT at home and also individual study time. I ensure to use learner’s names at all time and ask individual question when necessary in order to engaged learners and ascertain their level of understanding of the lesson. At the end of my teaching, I allow learners to ask questions and given appropriate answers. I end the session with my learners by summarising, answering their questions and finding out their individual learning outcomes. Finally, I then finish up administrative work like signing the register of learners, writing total number of learners and ensure the classroom is left tidy.
At the ‘Assessment’’ stage, there are two main types of assessment, formal and informal.
Assessment help to satisfy a number of different purposes in addition to learners learning, such as classifying achievement, quality assurance and supporting lifelong learning. As a teacher/ lecturer, I first organised initial assessment for my learners to test their knowledge of the course and level of literacy and numeracy due to the nature of the course. My class can be a mixture of different learners, some having done the course before and just need to repeat that level and others just starting completely. The information gathered from initially assessment of my learners will be taken into consideration seriously when designing my sessions because not all my learners will be in the same academy level and also how to meet their needs. I will ensure my session is designed in details, recommend necessary books to help and delivered on a timely manner in order for my learners to achieve their goal, to pass the external examination with excellent grade and make progress. In order for teaching to be very effective and also constantly monitoring my learner’s progress, I do organise tutorial for my learners which is mostly treating individual questions on pass topics and also opportunity work with them. They are put in a smaller group which will help them to participate more in class activities, learn from others and improve their confident on the course. The tutorial help me to constantly …show more content…
assess my learners on individual basis and also give them more necessary support on any topics they find challenging. I also assess my learners by given Assignments, quizzes or written tests, I ensure their works are marked on timely and written feedback is given. Sometimes, when necessary face-to-face feedback is given to individual learner in a constructive manner. I constantly keep my learners progress records and assessment scores are kept confidential which used by the college and external body.
As final assessment, this is usually done weeks before the external examination in their various centres. I usually set mock examination for my learners, which covers all the syllabus and past examination papers treated during the sessions. The mock examination will give my learners more confident, self evaluation on their progress and examination pressure. The scores are kept for quality assurance purpose for example internal and external verifiers, inspectors, to know the level of individual achievements and also for learner’s attendance. The final stage also serve as evaluation of the course and teacher/lecturer which the college developed and given to learners at the end of course period usually a rating form and written comments. The learners are able to report on the extent to which a teacher/lecturer appears prepared for each class sessions, communicates clearly, and stimulates interest and respect for learners. As a teacher/lecturer, I also get evaluated by the college principal and feedback on the evaluation is given immediately. The feedback could be for improvement on my teaching method, to ensure that the course syllabus is accurately followed, delivery quality teaching or for developing a portfolio for job application. I take necessary steps to make improvement on my teaching where needed so I decided to enrol and complete my PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) in order to enhance my career.
Identifying Needs and Planning: In order for me to be successful in my profession and also have a positive impact on my learners, it is important for me to understand my roles and responsibilities as a teacher/lecturer. As a teacher/lecturer, I will first have initial assessment of my learners in order to identify their level of the course; their preferred learning styles and also to identify any other barriers which can come under or challenges to passing their final examination. My learners are mostly foreigners and they have other challenges such as English as their second language, financial problems and personal problem so as a result, I also act as their mentor and advisor. As a result of the initial assessment of my learners, it help as a lecturer to plan lessons according to the need of my learners in accordance with procedures and policies of the governing body of the course and also make maximum use of additional support provided by the college in order for learners to have the highest chance of success. As a lecturer, after recognising my learners needs. I also need to identify best way to meet their needs and also available resources from the college to help my learners. For example, I notice one of my learners which English was their second language, I discovery that the particular learner was brilliant but had a bit of challenge in understanding fully the session so signpost the learner to other programme like English class and also recommend other resources. I ensure the learning environment is conducive for the learners for example seating arrangements, ventilation, appropriate lighting, heating and disability access. When delivering each lecture, I ensure I have a clear aims and objectives and use SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound). As a lecturer, I must that my lesson note or handout given to learners are specific to the course or topic treated for each day session and my lecture is deliver within the time bound for the course.
