I don’t have much of a social life, but I do have a network of very close friends. My network of friends includes people from all walks of life. Friends are the family we choose of our own free will; all kinds of friends are important. There are numerous advantages to having a diverse social life, and some of them are that you develop an insight into their lives, you are constantly being exposed to new music, and research shows that students who experience the most racial and ethnic diversity become better learners and more effective citizens.
Having friends who are culturally different from you allow you to develop an insight into their lives. It shows you how their practices or beliefs are different from yours, and how it leads to their growth. It teaches you to accept differences and to build an understanding that no culture is better than the other, but each has its unique features. Music takes on different sounds and social meanings. We get bagpipes from Ireland, the ukulele from Hawaii, Salsa from music from the Spanish and so on. Much of today’s modern music traces its roots to African American blues and gospel music from the 1920s. Jazz is America’s only original art form.
