Adventure: Fashion and Engine Sound
Adventure In the middle of May, on a bus platform in Boston, I looked up at the sky. It was bright blue as if painted by water colors. Meanwhile, I had mustered all my courage, and my brain was full of adrenaline. With the engine sound of BRRRRRR, the adventure started. Adventure. It is an exciting experience in which dangerous or unusual things happen. The meaning also involves a willingness to try new things, take risks. Last summer, I made a big bold plan, taking an Italian summer session at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, and then going to Italy on my own. I decided to go to Italy because I wanted to know what the city of the fashion capital of the world looks like. I desired to know the art of fashion merchandising. Through the adventure that happened that summer, I am convinced that I am captivated by experiencing adventures and willing to try new things and the willingness brings me good things. In June, the session finished more quickly than I expected. But even though learning basic Italian in English required a lot of translation in my mind, I found it really interesting and I got more confident to jump into Italy. On July 2nd, as soon as I was done with the final test, I rushed to JFK airport and swung aboard the airplane to continue my adventure in Milan, the fashion capital of the world. I was ready for the core of the adventure. Again with the engine sound of the plane, the main adventure started. Finally I landed in Milan on July 3rd. I spent some days just hanging out with some friends who I met at the hostel but one day when I was hanging around the city by myself, I found a small boutique named Officina Slowear and came in randomly. It turned out to be a conceptual men’s selective clothes store. A bald, old, cold, Italian male clerk who seemed humorless approached me and talked to me. As soon as I said that I was Japanese and studying Fashion Merchandising, he handed me a piece of paper with an address. Before I could even

Italy, a beautiful place if you ask me, the streets full of antique buildings and tons of traditions everywhere, something that is not easy to find. On my way to Venice I noticed that there weren’t as many people, the buildings looked abandoned and strange, and the people scurried around as if there was a secret buried amongst them. As I got of the cab I started to look around for clues or for some type of authority that could inform me about the whole case when suddenly someone spoke behind me “Why can’t you people understand that we don’t know anything about what happened to Mr. Fortunato?” his voice cold and full of exasperation. “I… I’m sorry? but--” I was about to explain myself when he cut me off, “You northerners are not welcomed here, all you do is disturb us and we’ve had enough.” And just like that he walked off into the distance. It was extremely clear that I was not welcomed but I had to do my job so I continued to look for some type of authority. When I finally found one he seemed to know exactly who I was and my reasons for being there. “Let me guess, you northerners are at it again aren’t you?” I looked at him as if I had no idea what he was talking about “Excuse…

The Voyage of Discovery 2016 explains my motives in its title–– I want to discover the country that holds both my family pastime and my current unbreakable passions. In my career, I plan to work with US/Italy relations revolving around business and teaching. The Voyage of Discovery 2016 will allow me to become exposed to the country that I wish to constantly work with in my future, and it will provide me with knowledge and understanding of cultural differences. Learning of cultural differences is something I believe is very important for Italian Americans to understand, which is why this would be a great part to take away from the Voyage of Discovery 2016 program. Gaining new knowledge of the Italian language and experiencing the culture that my family and ancestors have known for generations is something that I hope to take away from the Voyage of Discovery 2016. Altogether, traveling to Italy through the Voyage of Discovery 2016 program will allow me to follow my passion to learn and assimilate into the culture of…

I went out earlier than usual as I wanted to meet my old friend, Maddy. We promised to meet at Macdonald’s nearby my tuition centre. After waiting for fifteen minutes, Maddy arrived. We wondered around the shopping mall hoping to find any latest outfits that fits the trend now. While we were glancing at the shops, I came across a particular pair of shoes that got my eyes glued on it instantly. It had just arrived in Singapore and had unique designs on it. Without hesitation, I jolted into the shop to ask the salesman the price of the shoes.…
