Things I’ve learned I think the one thing that I’ve learned is that many people have forgotten how to speak to people with dignity. I currently work as a case worker for welfare and it’s clear that my training and back ground help me deal with clients. I’ve noticed other workers get short with people when they frustrated with them. As you know our client population is quite diverse and language barriers as well as cultural barriers exist. I can see the difference in the adversarial tone between their calls and mine. One thing that I really had some struggles with was my own personal bias. Having those ingrained memories of violence that people committed against others for no other reason than they were targets to get at the ruling government was probably something I still struggle with. One thing that really interests me is with marginalized populations. I would really like to pursue how to empower them and make them less marginal. One thing I’ve learned about other cultures is that they can be very patriarchal. I might have a problem with a population like this because if a father is a part of the problem with their family will they are open to help and look at themselves as possibly a cause. I think it’s something to be aware of and recognize that I have these feelings. I think if or when that arises ill rely on other peers to help work out if those feeling are correct or coming from that bias
