“The Children’s Era” was delivered in 1925 and was written to promote the use of birth control. Sanger says, “When we point out the one immediate practical way toward order and beauty in society, the only way to lay the foundations of a society composed of happy children, happy women, and happy men, they call this idea indecent and immoral.” Sanger tries to make her audience understand that too many children are born to parents who are ill prepared for them and/ or don’t want them, thus setting these children up for failure from the beginning. When this piece was written, Stephen Burd was a senior writer for the Chronicle of Higher Education and had been working in that capacity for nearly a decade. In this context it makes sense that he would write on such things as the "working-class student". White male, middle-aged, middle-class, bachelors degree in history- all of these are attributed to Mr. Burd (though none of these things are explicitly referenced in his writing). A pregnant mother walks into frame and is placing sharp pins into an infant’s changing pad, as the scene changes she sharpens knives to hang from the infants mobile. The scene changes a few more times showing the mothers actions such as pouring poison into a baby bottle, inserting a child’s fork into an electrical socket, and laying a snake in the infant’s stroller. The scene changes one more time, the mother is sitting on a couch caringly stroking her stomach as she brings a cigarette to her mouth and then sits an ash tray on top of her stomach. This advertisement leaves viewers with the phrase “A mother can be her baby’s worst enemy” and the words of the Cancer Society of Finland explaining that ten thousand babies are at risk because of smoking during pregnancy as well to encourage mothers to quit smoking. This advertisement is trying to convey the dangers of smoking with showing “equivalences” of the same dangers of other hazards.
