Afghanistan Baba Compare And Contrast
Baba is criticizing the Muslim faith and isn't a strict Muslim, if he is one at all. (E) Baba may naturally be brash and outrageous instead of spiteful like I said earlier. (CL) Most religious leaders now tend to be bigoted and spew what they believe as fact and confuse children who're forced to listen to them. It’s unfair and doesn't allow children to choose their own faith. (R) "god help us all if Afghanistan ever falls into their hands." (17) is clear reference to the later civil war and extreme Islamic conservatism that took over Afghanistan in the 1990s and early 2000’s. The Afghanistan in the modern world and the Afghanistan Baba and Amir are living in are very different. (C) (P)

It is Baba’s choice that set the story of Amir and Hasan into motion. His brief moment of infidelity and the fact he was never able to fully claim his illegitimate son led to a chronicle of events that defined Amir. However, it was not only this choice that came to affect the people around him. The way he raised Amir under the constant pressure of being someone he was not, ultimately led for his son to believe he needed to prove his worth. During the kite contest Amir confesses that he needs to “Show [Baba] once and for all that his son was worthy” (56), showcasing a boy who has the incessant need to prove his self-worth. Despite this Baba never truly accepted his son as he was, and even confessed that Amir is “A boy who won’t stand up for himself” (22). Throughout the majority of his life, Baba tried his best to shape Amir into the son he designed. Just like how he bends the world into his liking Baba sought to mold Amir to be just like him. In the end, however, it was revealed that he was merely a man with a “tortured soul” (301), who saw redemption in the marks he would leave the…

Baba responds with “You’ve confused what you’re learning in school with actual education” (p.16) and insists, “You’ll never learn anything of value from those bearded idiots. God help us all if Afghanistan ever falls into their hands” (p.17). Baba’s opinion of religion seems to be that it cannot be learned or experienced by institutional means, and he furthers this by questioning the existence of God and the importance of adhering to the laws of their religion. Baba subscribes to a common notion of religion as a practice that does more harm than good and Amir seems to mirror his father’s view and does little in the way of religious…

Ironically Baba told Amir “When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth.” Meanwhile, he was deceiving Amir and Hassan about their biological connection. The hypocritical behavior displayed by Baba throughout the novel showed that he and Amir were more alike than initially thought. Both Amir and Baba tried their hardest to conceal secrets that they were ashamed of, even if it meant hurting ones that they love. Although both characters showed major character developments when they tried to atone themselves. Baba thought that by doing as many good things as he could, like: giving Hassan gifts, building an orphanage, and including Hassan in as many father-son activities as possible, that it would make up for the sins that he committed in earlier…
