1. Purpose / Objective

The following case analysis of Aflac, which is a Fortune 100 company, will give a brief overview of the company. The analysis will include how the management of the company works and maintains long-term success throughout the years. I expect to learn while researching about Aflac are the strategies the company uses and how they remain fiscal responsible.

Mr. McKeague was chosen out 12,500 people who also auditioned online and live. Mr. McKeague is a 36 year old radio executive and has also performed voice over work for local advertisers. The former Aflac duck voice was done by Gilbert Gottfried who was dismissed on March 14th after he posted on his person Twitter account a series of jokes about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Dan McKeague of Hugo, Minn., a suburb of Minneapolis, was chosen from among more than 12,500 people who auditioned online and live. Mr. McKeague is a sales manager for two Minneapolis FM radio stations that are part of Citadel Broadcasting, KQRS and Love 105.
Mr. McKeague, who is 36, has also performed voice-over work in commercials for local advertisers.
Aflac found it necessary to search for a new voice for the duck after the company fired the comedian Gilbert Gottfried, who had supplied the character 's squawking cry of ' 'Aflac! ' ' since the campaign began. Mr. Gottfried was dismissed on March 14 after he posted to his Twitter account a series of jokes about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Although Aflac runs different commercials in Japan, which do not use Mr. Gottfried 's voice, his posts hit a nerve because about 75 percent of the company 's revenue is derived from Japan.Alfac decided to try to create some positive publicity after the incident by conducting a nationwide audition to find Mr. Gottfried 's

    Geico is a car insurance company which has used several advertising techniques that address many of the fifteen basic appeals, described by Jib Fowles, to gain potential customers (Fowles 1). For instance, the need for affiliation has been catered to through advertising depicting Geico as the best there is. People tend to affiliate themselves with top companies. Emotional appeal is catered to primarily; the premise being to invoke the idea that getting Geico insurance will make you happy. A series of “Happier Than” television advertisements were aired (Geico). Each episode portrays a random scenario, followed by two Bluegrass pickers named Ronny and Jimmy, performing a slapstick routine on a small stage. Each event leads to one picker asking a question along the line of, “How happy are people when they switch to Geico?” at which point the second picker delivers a punch line related to the content of the commercial (Geico).     Aflac was founded by brothers John, Paul, and Bill Amos in 1955. Aflac Incorporated is an international holding company based in Columbus, Georgia. In 1958 Aflac was recognized for introducing one of the world’s first cancer expense insurance policies. In its initial year 5,810 plans were sold and by the end of the decade Aflac had 376 agents selling insurance in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. Aflac began adding many new insurance policies, including accident, short-term disability, hospital intensive care, hospital confinement indemnity, lump sum cancer, lump sum critical illness, specified health event, life, dental, and vision. In 1964 Aflac developed the “cluster-selling” technique of making presentations to groups of employees, this conserved time and effort rather than doing face to face with each employee. Aflac is the number one supplemental health provider in the U.S. The company is present in all 50 states and in Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Aflac insures more than 50 million people worldwide and has 70,000 licensed agents. (Aflac Annual Report for 2010) They are currently ranked 125 on the Fortune 500 list of America’s largest corporations. In the mid-1970s Aflac entered the Japanese market and they were only the third American insurance company to be licensed to sell in Japan. Aflac was set to do well in the Japanese market, with cancer insurance not available from Japanese insurers and cancer awareness growing in Japan good things were in line for the company. They insure approximately one out of every four households in Japan. They also insure more than 35,400 payroll accounts representing 89% of the companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, as well as employers and employees at 159,610 small businesses. A few years ago it was “Stuart”—the geeky, red-headed know-it-all who appeared in commercials for online stock trading company Ameritrade—who struck a chord with viewers.
