The earliest European slave traders were the Portuguese explorers starting the year 1532 soon the Dutch, French, English, and Africans got involved in the slave trade. There was a big difference between African slavery and European slavery. There was many reason why slavery was used such as plantation workers and mining. Slavery in Africa and slavery in Europe had huge differences between them. Slavery was allowed in Africa during those times slaves were always treated like members of the family bad treatment with slaves was always not allowed. Slaves could also work to earn their freedom and become free through hard work. Marriages between slaves and the members of their masters' families was allowed. Also slaves could hold important positions in the government and become leaders of their tribes. African slaves were usually war captives or criminals. European slavery was much harsher. Slaves were always given a low degree of treatment than the family members of their masters. It usually depended on the master's goodness if the slaves would ever be freed and given their rights back. The marriage between slaves and masters was a forbidden. Slaves were always bound to be slaves for generations in European slavery while in African slavery, the children of slaves were not labeled as slaves. The way they got the slaves consisted of them giving guns and other weapons to tribe leaders in Africa and exchange for the slaves who were usually prisoners of war or criminals that were in jail. They increase the warfare in Africa with the weapons they gave. To them it was cheaper to import slaves then encourage childbirth.
