Patau syndrome and Cerebral palsy which has affected part of the brain and nervous system resulting in hearing loss, sight loss or dual sensory loss in addition to movement and co-ordination. Most individuals who have acquired deaf blindness have at some stage been able to see and hear and this can happen more so through the ageing process normally around 60-65 years old and will affect about 8 of 10 people ,however there are individuals who have been exposed to repeated loud noises or been injured which can bring on ear damage over time and this can be at any age. The cause of sight loss is extremely varied and the most common for loss of vision can include diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, most individuals have these checked regularly each year if they have diabetes by a trained optician who looks deep into the pupil at the front to see how much light enters and then behind the lens ,which focuses the light onto the retina at the back of the eye.
It's important to have this procedure as the retina is a very delicate and converts light into images which are then sent to the brain. Other parts of the retina is the macula made up of delicate cells which can be found at the centre of the retina, if these become damaged or stop working we won't be able to process information received through these light images and our reading and distinguishing colours and fine detail diminishes. another eye condition could be cataracts which can only be described as clouding of the lens in the eye, this will give a frosted, faded blurred vision to an individual which has built up over time not allowing light to focus images clearly caused by a build up of skin over the eyes. Hearing loss such as Conductive hearing loss is caused by an obstruction, which mainly affects the middle or outer ear this may be due to fluid build up such as wax or an infection and is treatable and can affect any age
group. However a condition known as Otoclerosis that becomes present can cause the bone to harden within the middle ear and can cause poor hearing ,a muffled dull low sound due to not being able to vibrate can be attributed to a serious injury such as a perforated ear drum can be corrected through surgery such as fitting grommets, hearing aid. Permanent hearing loss Sensorineural occurs when the inner ear has been exposed to loud noise and with the aging process which has affected the tiny hairs or nerves in the cochlea. these are needed to send signals back to the brain.
