Learning outcome 1. Be able to address the range of communication requirements in own Role.
1.1 Review the range of groups and individuals whose communication needs must be addressed in own job role.
The tenants whom I am responsible for have communication difficulties and need support to enable them to express themselves effectively. It is important within my role as senior to be aware of the individuals preferred methods of communication. The communication methods of individual’s are very important because it’s their major way of communicating their needs and preferences. Communication is a basic human right. Under the Human Rights Act 1998 Article 10 all individuals have the right to ‘Freedom of Expression’ If individuals are unable to communicate, this would be denying them these rights. Yes, great
We support people with different and varying types of communication difficulties, such as:
Hearing Loss- this ranges from individuals who have a slight hearing impairment, to being profoundly deaf in one or both ears.
Learning Disabilities- All of our tenants have learning disabilities. They can be affected mildly, moderately or severely. These can have big implications on their ability to communicate effectively. A large proportion of individuals with a severe learning disability have no effective verbal speech.
Sight Loss- sight is an important part of communicating. Most of what we communicate is non-verbal communication, through body language, facial expressions, how we stand, how we use our hands. People who are partially sighted and wear glasses cannot always read this form of communication effectively.
Autism- Individuals we support have some communication disorders which make is difficult for them to communicate/interact or understand what is being communicated to them. This can be due to the lack of eye contact, being unable to concentrate for any length of time(short concentration span)
