Socialization is an integral part of our development and growth as individuals. It is defined as the way we take in customs, norms, and knowledge through our interaction with external forces. Socialization allows us to form habits and pattern of behavior that help us function to our potential in the society we live in. There are four familiar settings that play the biggest part in how we socialize. These are the agents of socialization; family, school, peer group, and mass media. These agents have made a large impact on how my life is today a college student. My experience in my entire college a career has been shaped by the group of people I have been around with the most while growing up.

From the time I was born, up until today. My family has been around to guide me through every aspect of life. My dad was a very easy go lucky type of guy, while my mother was strong willed and action oriented. I eventually took in bits and pieces of their personality. I would say I am right in between, which has made me a balanced person. In times of stress, such as preparing for a test for a college class; I find myself able to calm and collect my thoughts and focus at the task at hand. How I

I was fortunate enough to have good teachers and faculty members. The kids I grew up with were mostly from middle classes families such as my own. Diversity was present as well as many of the students were a mixture of different races and cultural backround without one being predominant. This has shaped my attitude in college and high school as I learned to respect my teachers and get along with a diverse group of people such as here in wright college. Socializing with different groups of people helped me develop a way of embracing different ways of thinking. I think this is important, since this makes you open minded. Socialization is the way people interact with one another on a daily basis. Humans interact in many ways on the phone, the internet, through the mail, and in person face-to-face. There are several agents to socialization; three of them are family, religion, and the workplace. All of these social roles are portrayed in a different light, and as life situations change social roles change. Things that can change a social role are a person going from being single to married, having a first child, being a rehabilitated drug user, or a change in religion or job.…

The diversity in the United States has helped me to better understand and relate to others in ways that I may not have in the past. I have learned much from this class and about myself that there is still discrimination and prejudice in the United States. I have learned that I need to take the time and to get to know a person before I make any judgments against them. There are so many different kinds of people in the United States with the different backgrounds. We do not need to discriminate against anyone until we can look at ourselves first to make sure we are clean. We need to look beyound the core of there skin and what they are wearing, and the way they talk. Since this class I have steped back and looked around to see how people act with each other some get along just fine then you have the few that you can tell are uncomfortable. I have learned that everyone needs to be treated as equals it does not matter what your age, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disability. We just need to all get along and to educate others.…

Friends or peer groups can have a big influence on our identity as well. Close friends who we see on a daily basis can be just as important to us as family. Other friends that we see in certain social settings such as work or school are considered secondary agents. In the earlier years, parents are careful about who they let their children become friends with because eventually the influence of friends will be stronger than the influence of family as the child grows older. Also as we get older society judges us based on who we are friends with. If we hang out with people who do drugs, other people will think we do drugs when in actuality we may not (Vissing, 2011, Chapter 2.4).…

Coming from a small, mostly white town, I never grew up around a lot of diversity. The most diverse my school got was the fact that there was one African American student and around three homosexual students. In relation to that, it was interesting to learn that there are specific ways to organize a classroom in order to be fully inclusive of every race, sexuality, or gender identity. When thinking about becoming a teacher, I never took into account how easily offended Americans are where one comment or action can be twisted into an attack on someone, and the importance of making sure that every student feels comfortable requires a lot more…
