On a smaller scale, I take part in global engagement with the five foster teens who I care for on a weekly basis.
These teens are all considered high risk and all have serious mental health challenges. When we are together I model how to be a good citizen. Together we complete small volunteer projects such as working at community activities and the food
bank.
Last year I did a clothing drive amongst my friends and family to help support these teens. I brought many large bags of clothing for the teens to choose from. When they asked me where I got all the clothing from and I explained that I asked friends and family for their unwanted clothes. The teens were very happy that they had some new (to them) clothing that they felt confident in wearing to school. When we were done of the boys said “we never got cool clothes like this at my old foster home”. We then discussed how we can help others without having much to give. Together, we worked to come up with the idea that the teens could donate their unwanted clothing to the clothing drive and we could bring it to the Children’s Aid Society so that other foster kids could get some new cloths.
Additionally to my global engagement, I have maintained an average of above an A for the last 4 years of my post-secondary education. I believe that I would be an excellent candidate for the Sharon Cook Excellence in Teaching Award. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Hunter Kelly
