Airplanes
Have you ever thought about how many people like to travel? To Hawaii, London, or Italy etc. Have you ever thought about how many people would still like to travel even if the invention of an airplane never happened? Imagine having to spend days in a car or on a train just to get to you destination, would you still want to travel? I believe the invention of an airplane was brilliant. The airplane is not only one of the greatest inventions in the 20th century, but also the most wonderful scientific creation of the human history. The inventors of the first airplane were Orville and Wilbur Wright. On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers made the first successful experiment in which a machine carrying a man rose by its own power, flew naturally and at even speed, and descended without damage. That machine was named "airplane". Their achievement was not the matter of only a single day. On the contrary, they had worked day-in and day-out with determination and had invented seven initial shapes of aircraft including one kite, three gliders, and three powered airplanes. Throughout their childhood Wilbur and Orville were encouraged to learn and experiment with new things by their loving parents. The father, Milton, was a bishop in the United Brethren Church and would often be away on trips but would sometimes bring home gifts for the boys. One particular gift started it all. It was the gift of a rubber band-powered helicopter. Right from the beginning Wilbur and Orville tried to make duplicates of the flying toy. The curiosity of the toy stayed with the boys until they were men when they then started to go beyond just a flying helicopter and onto a much larger than life aircraft.

An airplane by definition is an aircraft that has a fixed wing and is powered by propellers or jets. Most of us only have to look up into the sky to see an airplane, and many of us have traveled by airplane to places that would have taken much longer to get to if we using a different

Increasing angle of attack on any airfoil causes the area of the streamtube above the wing to decrease. This produces a greater velocity increase above the wing than below the wing. The greater velocity increases the pressure differential on a cambered airfoil. The greater pressure differential on…

In the Women’s Brain, Gould tells of the misinformed data of a woman's brain through the use of rhetoric analysis such as detail, bias, logos, ethos, etc. He uses this information to gravitate toward scientist, to show how they mislead the information and need to improve on data. The author uses a judgmental tone when stating bias when he say, “In the most intelligent races, as among the Parisian,” when he is of such race.…

On December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first sustained flight with a machine that weighed more than air, and with a pilot flying the aircraft. The twelve-second flight, with Orville at the controls, was a revolutionary event in American history. Airplanes were now being manufactured for all sorts of reasons; they were all based on the Kitty Hawk Flyer’s design. The Wright Brothers’ first flight created a whole new world of transportation for both civilian and military purpose.…

Can we fly? This question has been asked for centuries by hundreds of inventors and philosophers alike; some of who are discussed in the National Geographic article I read titled: If We Only Had Wings. The author of this article, Nancy Shute, writes about the trials, ideas, and achievements of inventors such as Leonardo da Vinci and the Wright brothers. However, the article is even more interesting because while describing the progression of personal aircrafts throughout history, she also depicts her flying experience while hang gliding. This article was very informative as well, with information ranging from the steps of flying a hang glider, to the science behind how humming birds are able to defy gravity. Overall I loved this article; it was short but filled with information and pictures that are able to tell stories.…

New technology in the 1920s attributed to the change. Inventions such as the radio helped improve communication. Court trials, conventions, and meetings were broadcasted. Electrical appliances improved homes. In 1922, Sinclair Lewis wrote, "These standard advertised wares- toothpastes, socks, tires, cameras, instantaneous hot-water heaters – were his symbols and proofs of excellence, at first the signs, then the substitutes, for joy and passion and wisdom" (Document A.) The invention of the motion picture was also very significant. The invention of the airplane was influential as well. Charles Lindbergh's nonstop, 33-hour flight from New York to Paris helped increase interest in planes. Afterwards, Lindbergh became almost a world hero. Mary B. Mullett stated in The American Magazine, "When, because of what we believe him to be, we gave Lindbergh the greatest ovation in history, we convicted ourselves of having told a lie about ourselves. For we proved that the "things of good report" are the same today as they were nineteen hundred years ago . . . to have shown us this truth about ourselves is the biggest thing that Lindbergh has done" (Document F.) Within two years, William E. Boeing had created the first commercial airplane and was flying people from San Francisco to Chicago in it. The automobile was the biggest invention of its time. The automobile helped the tourist industry, and created some new businesses, such as gas stations, motels, and roadside restaurants. The automobile was popular, as it created a sense of freedom and power for those who drove it. Henry Ford was credited the most for the automobile. His assembly line made Model T was inexpensive…

Before the Wright Brothers, many inventors, such as Daedalus from Greek mythology, attempted to construct the first device of flight, but all failed. The closest people ever got to flight was the creation of the hot air balloon by the Montgolfier Brothers. “While the hot air balloon was a remarkable discovery, it did not provide a practical means of transportation because of its lack of steering.” But, the invention of the plane did not start with the airplane itself. It started with gliders, which many people achieved in making, including the Wright Brothers.…
