Can you imagine what our world would be like today if we didn’t have airplanes? We wouldn’t be able to hop on and get somewhere in a jiffy. Travel would take a lot longer, which would mean less time for fun activities. The outcome of World War I, as well as any other war following it could have been completely different. Planes are a huge convenience to so many people. They are probably one of the most important inventions ever. Orville and Wilbur Wright changed history on December 17, 1903 at Kill Devil Hill, right outside of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina (Rosenberg). The Wrights invented the first airplane which aided in the fighting of World War I and created a new form of transportation.
The Wright’s began with a four cylinder, eight horsepower, gasoline engine that weighed 152 pounds; which took them six weeks to build. After experimenting several times with the engine, they …show more content…
The Wright’s sold their first plane to the United States Army in 1909, and by 1915 the Wright’s had supplied the Army with fourteen airplanes (Military Use of the Airplane). In the beginning, the main role of the airplane in the war was for observation, but it didn’t take long for men to start adding guns to make the plane a war machine. Frenchman Roland Garros attached a machine gun to his plane, making an attempt to synchronise with the propeller and using metal bands to deflect bullets from this vital piece. After a brief period of aerial dominance Garros crashed, and the Germans were able to study his craft. Anthony Fokker, who was working for the Germans, created interrupter gear to allow a machine gun to be shot and miss the propeller. The Germans wanted Anthony to take it for a test flight and shoot down a French plane. He agreed, however when he had a French plane in his sights, he could not fire. He said “the Germans can do the killing, I have no issues with the French”
