In my opinion, I think the essay “The Price We Pay” by Adam Mayblum was written extremely well because it contained a very personal and devastating experience in which the writer will never ever forget his long journey, as well as his co-workers long journey out of the North Tower of the World Trade Center before it collapsed. I felt the essay portrayed very descriptive scenes and events that took place on that day which made the reader want to read on. In addition, I felt that you could sense his compassion for his co-workers and his sense of duty to alert the firemen and women about people he left behind. Nonetheless, his story tells of events that took place inside the building while having no sense of what was actually occurring from…

Alex had always loved this type of weather, it was the very best thing about Queensland. It was a pressing heat, dry yet humid. It was a warmth you could feel in every area of your body. A pressure that only meant one thing, an incoming storm that would arrive late in the evening. It was the best time to be outside; the best time to swim, to play football, to sun bathe. Things Alex longed to be doing, things that she would be doing, that is if she was not incarcerated inside a saunaesque - filled to the brim with seventeen year old male body odour - classroom, reading an inarticulate book she wasn't even sure the author of the book would read.…

I see myself laying down and looking at the sky. It looked like I was in heaven. When I got up I saw a house. I went inside and saw a paper. It said that my mission is to kill the Ender Dragon. I didn't know a thing about Ender Dragon. I searched the house and looked at the world. the world was made up of blocks. Not one block or two blocks. Thousands of them. Haphazardly I realized that I was in mine-craft. A game that I used to play this game when I was seven years old. I thought that it was only a dream, so I tried to wake myself up. But I couldn't. I still thought that it was a dream and went with it. Near me was a waterfall and some chickens. I went in my house. There was a chest, laying there, and I opened the chest. When I opened…

It was morning, but something was not right. I felt strange like my body was not my own. I was in the same room, yet something was different. I got up looked in the mirror and was astonished at what I saw. I felt that what I was looking at could not be a mirror because the images I saw were not of me. I saw a poorly shaven man of about twenty-five staring back at me. He was thin and looked like death had barely escaped him. He was scary, although what scared me the most is thinking about what had happened to…

I continue on the Briones to Diablo Trail and soon intersect with the Indian Creek Trail. As I near the junction, an owl hoots in the distance. The sound is coming from the oak woodland below, along Indian Creek, the namesake for the trail. I descend the trail in the twilight and head into the embrace of the woods. The owl continues its haunting call as I wander further down the trail. I stop and listen, and soon enough, I spot a dark silhouette on a branch not far away. I watch for a while, taking in the mystery and magic of the moment as the dark begins to close in. Soon it will be too dark to see in this sheltered area of the…
