The book Ancient Light by John Banville focus on the past and present experiences of the main character Alexander Cleave. Cleave is currently in his early 60s reminiscing about the two distressing events that happened in his past. He had supposedly had a love affair with the mother of his bestfriend, whom is Billy Gray, in a small town where he had grew up. The other traumatic event in his life was the suicide of his daughter Cass. He have not been the same since then. It all came together when he was offered a position to play a lead role in a film.
He clearly questions himself on whether these memories are real or fake. He says “I cannot tell whether they are memories or inventions. Not that there is much difference between the two, if indeed there is any difference at all. Some say that without realizing it we make it all up as we go along”.
