Alien Encounter
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2174136/Aliens-Well-probably-close-encounter-century-says-leading-physicist-warns-governments-ready.html

“Aliens? We’ll probably have a close encounter this century says leading physicist who warns government to be ready” was written by Fiona Macrae in July, 2012. Macrae is a science reporter at the Daily Mail. She studied medical microbiology at Edinburgh University before training in journalism in Cardiff. This had been the first article I have read that was written by her. The title of the article gained my attention since it was talking about aliens. I don’t really believe in aliens but this article made me think twice about it. I think this article was meant for all age groups because it is a general topic that most people feel strongly about.
The article was mainly talking about aliens and how we are going to encounter them very soon. It has mentioned how unprepared we are and how we have to think about approaching them. A poll that was given showed that more than 2000 men and women do believe that aliens and extra-terrestrials exist and they have mentioned that we should be searching and trying to make contact with them. In conclusion, it has been said that if aliens do visit us and learn about our existence, we risk an invasion that could lead to the end of life on Earth.
The author did not have a voice in this article at all. She just explained her point and quoted many people. The language of this article was formal and straightforward making it easier for the reader to understand. I liked how the author had many resources about this topic and how she really wanted us to believe the existence of aliens. I felt a little worried while reading this because I don’t think Earth is ready for an alien encounter. A lot of people wouldn’t even think about it and how it may affect planet Earth. I feel like we have to prepare for this and think more about it because it is an important

he said he knew that because he found lots of evidence, like he found a lot of photos that show the exposure of the alien. In order to make his voice stronger, The President of the United States , which is authoritative, I think no one dares to oppose. By adding some metaphysical and politic elements, which shows more Robert's view is wrong, because these elements themselves are virtual, difficult to define. In fact, this is a good strategy, is to change people's mind, because a lot of people unconditionally believe that she no matter what. Read this, some readers, even because of her relationship with president and admire and worship her. In the final, Robert says his article: " Some people may think this is a fiction, but I can assure you, this is the reality," because there is no objection he nor any of the message area for people to question the discussion, so people Forced or voluntarily believed…

Concerning Climate Change “Clear, Catastrophic threats, Manne opens the article with an anecdote, that a “part of the english syllabus [as a schoolboy] was “clear thinking”” (Manne 2011). This anecdote should set up a relevance and an accessibility to the reader drawing them in and sympathising with the argument that will be put forward. Almost a third of the article is dense with data. “1500 or so leading climate scientists” (Manne 2011), “928 scientific papers” (Manne 2011), “...peerreviewed scientific journals” (Manne 2011), a part of a letter written to every US senator from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in regards to climate change. Following this Manne uses an appeal to authority as a persuasive technique. Climate change being an issue where expertise is paramount, the use of authority anchors the argument to what is right and wrong, clear. Manne does this by bringing up Naomi Oreskes, a historian of science, whose work showed evidence of the consensus of the fundamental theory of climate change. The work was included in the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in which it was the basis of the report. Finally, and probably most importantly, the article uses science as an authority. Science deals with facts and evidence, therefore using a definate as an authority it is effective in persuading the reader that the stance of the article is the right stance.…

Great job with your post. You picked a great article and brought up many questions that all readers should be asking. I really liked how you read against the grain and questioned the authors definition and meaning of certain sentences. By reading against the grain you were able to look at the article from a different view then and bring up many points that I did not think about when reading the article the first time. After this assignment I will begin to read with and against the grain in all my textbook readings and scholarly articles to become a stronger reader.…

This article was about the baby Einstein videos that Disney came out with. In the article it explained how Disney used deceptive advertising and gave refunds out to parents who bought the video. The author is Mira Jacob who is an editor at the online magazine Shine. The target audiences are people who remember the great baby Einstein scam. I believe this author was right in what he wrote and Disney did the right thing by refunding people who bought the videos. I don’t see this research as a problem it’s just to show you don’t believe everything you see on TV.…

The reader is told, “Let both sides invoke the wonders of science instead of its terrors. Together let us explore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depths and encourage the arts and commerce”. The quote is implying that the nation and our allies should focus on the solution of the problem instead blaming who or what caused it. Health scares and running out of food is not always something that we consider as a nation to happen but it does to multiple people even if we did not even realize. Medicine can be a solution to help prevent from emotional stress. People do not sweat the issue of diseases as much even though they do not know the outcome because they believe. It is a for sure thing because it is facts that is backed up by recommended sources either friends, trusted sources, doctors and pharmacist. Another example to help prevent food shortage is by the community uniting and taking matters into their own hands. The way the community can give back is by donating food to their local food banks. Actions cannot make others fearful because they know they have the power to make this world a better place so they feel more fearless instead of fearful. Finally, Fear is an emotion mostly out of care. It is portrayed in current real life situations today like: veterans, homeless people, and people with…

    1. Rachel Carson main point in “Negotiating the Environment” part I is that the place she is describing might not exist, but what does exist is the fact that every disaster she mentioned has happened somewhere. The story is an effective way to put this point across because the reader can get the idea of what could happen and how the world will look if we don’t take care of it. Her main argument in part II is that humanity is destroying nature with all the contamination and substances being used. She does appeal to logic and reason. She gives examples of what could happen and she establishes reasons of why we should believe her because she gives facts and not just her opinions.…

In Ashland, Nebraska, on December 3, 1967, Herbert Schirmer, a 22 years young patrolman, was making his usual rounds. He had checked the Ashland Sales Barn, and several gas stations along Highway 6 when he noticed what he thought were red lights on top of a large truck. He had just passed through the intersection of Highways 6 and 63 at about 2:00 AM.He drove the short distance down 63 and stopped with his headlights shining on the object. According to Schirmer, the object was definitely not a truck. The red lights that he had seen were blinking through the oval portholes of a metallic, oval-shaped object that was hovering at a height of about eight feet above the road's surface. The object appeared to have a polished, aluminum surface and had a sort of walk around it. It had a structure underneath, like a landing gear.As he watched, the object rose into the air with flames coming from underneath. It passed almost directly over Schirmer's patrol car, then quickly shot out of sight.Schirmer returned to the police station, noting that it was now 3:00 AM., which surprised him because he felt that only ten minutes had passed. At the station, he made this entry into his logbook:"Saw a flying saucer at the junction of highways 6 and 63. Believe it or not!"Afterward, Schirmer developed a red welt on his neck, a headache, and he began to feel ill. Word of Schirmer's sighting was related to the Condon Commission at the University of Colorado, which investigated UFO reports.Schirmer was asked to come to Boulder, Colorado. At Boulder, on February 13, 1968, he was hypnotized by psychologist Dr. Leo Sprinkle of the University of Wyoming.Under hypnosis, Schirmer recalled that, after he stopped his car near the object, the engine died and his radio went silent. A white object emerged from the craft and seemed to communicate mentally with him, preventing him from drawing his gun as he was want to do.After the hypnotic session had…

Michael Crichton’s essay “Lets Stop Scaring Ourselves” makes readers think twice at any time they hear of an issue that may affect them. Crichton reasons that people will often scare themselves whenever they hear of an issue that will upset their lives. Crichton starts his essay by declaring that when the scientists were predicting the world to experience global cooling rather than global warming. Then follows with how the world was to suppose to have ended. In the duration of his essay he pronounces a sense of miscalculations from people who’ve made predictions about how our world will end or be destroyed. Crichton states that these predictions terrified people making them believe we would have global cooling, experience a decline in the population and experience brain damage using cell phones.…
