Aliphatic Amine Experiment
Discussion
An amount of 853 mg of alcohol was obtained in the flask. After the experiment was performed, amount recovered was 1259mg (I think you have these flipped). Percent yield of the crude product was 67.75%. (What does this percentage mean?) The IR spectrum of purified product identified the Arene strand of 2969.71 indicating C-H stretch. Ester which indicated a C=O stretch of a 1750-1735. Aliphatic amines showed an absorption band of 1217.62 indicating a C-N stretch. (This makes no sense, look at the molecule you have and relate the points. Furthermore, you need to compare your results to a literature source)
An example of a practical application would be using the ester to produce flavors in products. It could be used in a laboratory where they are trying to find out the best taste to use in a given product. (This needs more detail)

The first improvement would be to have a heating instrument that heats to a desired point and does not go above or below a set temperature. Another improvement would be using different glass ware or heating supplies when boiling water in order to shorten the boiling time (This is not a valid improvement). The final improvement to this protocol would be using more accurate supply to remove the aqueous layer from the bottom of the conical vial, without taking the upper layer (This is not a valid improvement).
Conclusion
The overall process of synthesizing ester by esterification of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol was accomplished, the percent recovery, and IR results were

Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to synthesize Isopentyl Acetate using a Fischer esterification reaction. Fischer esterification is an acid-catalyzed condensation of an alcohol and a carboxylic acid, yielding an ester and water. Isopentyl Acetate has the scent of banana oil, once synthesized it will be purified by distillation. Then the analysis of the sample using H NMR and IR will determine purity of the product.…

The purpose of this lab, to form various esters by combining various carboxylic acids and alcohols, was successful. The process of esterification are when a carboxylic acid reacts with an alcohol and produces an ester, or an organic compound, and water. Esters produce a certain scent which is usually fruity. In the first reaction, glacial acetic acid, or ethanoic acid, reacted with isoamyl alcohol and produced isoamyl ethanoate and water. The resulting ester scent was banana.…

The purpose of this experiment was to determine which of the 3 compounds was formed from the starting material. The third compound was the oxidation of both alcohols. This could not have been my product because of the results of my IR. I had a broad large absorption is the range of 3200 to 3500 wavenumbers. This indicates the presence of an alcohol. If my compound had been fully oxidized then there would be no such alcohol present. Also, because of my IR, I know that my compound was one of the other 2 compounds because of the strong sharp absorption at 1705 wavenumbers. This indicates the presence of a carbonyl. Therefore I had to prove which of the two compounds my final product was. The first was the oxidation of the primary alcohol, forming an aldehyde and a secondary alcohol. The textbook states that aldehydes show 2 characteristic absorption’s in the range of 2720-2820 wavenumbers. No such absorption’s were present in my sample. Therefore my final product was the oxidation of the secondary alcohol. My final product had a primary alcohol and a secondary ketone.…

Esters are carboxylic acid derivatives in which the acyl carbon bears an ether group instead of the hydroxy group. Esters are synthesized by different methods such as an Sn2 process where a carboxylic acid is treated with a strong base followed by an alkyl halide. Fischer Esterification is a nucleophilic acyl substitution reaction that converts a carboxylic acid into an ester when the carboxyl group of an acid and the hydroxyl group of an alcohol are condensed with the expulsion of a water molecule. The by product is removed to exploit Le Chatelier’s principle in order to favor the formation of the ester over the starting material.…

Esters are a chemical functional group that usually forms by loosing a hydroxyl group and having it replaced with an alkoxy group with the loss of hydrogen. Esters are most commonly produced by taking a carboxylic acid, and reacting it with an alcohol with a acid catalyst in a process known as Fischer esterfication. Esters can be used in many ways including perfumes and artificial flavorings, and can be used alone or in a cocktail of different esters working together. Isopentyl acetate is the ester being synthesized in this lab. Isopentyl acetate has a strong banana odor when undiluted, and a pear odor when diluted. It is also used as an artificial flavor of butterscotch, honey, coffee, banana, and pear.…

A Fischer Esterification is the formation of an ester and water from alcohol and an acid. More specifically it is a nucleophillic acyl substitution reaction carried out under acidic conditions. Carboxylic acids alone are not reactive enough to be attacked by neutral alcohols, but they can be made much more reactive in the presence of a strong acid, such as sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid. The mineral acid protonates the carbonyl group oxygen atom and gives the carboxylic acid a positive charge. Now positively charged, the carboxylic acid is much more reactive toward a nucleophillic attack by the alcohol.…

The synthesized product, isopentyl acetate, is made by the reaction of isopentyl alcohol and glacial acetic acid with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the catalyzing agent. The crude ester produced in lab was isopentyl acetate, because first, the product smelled of bananas and second, the IR spectrum for the product shows that the product is isopentyl acetate. As for the purity of the product, the distillation of the crude ester showed that its boiling point was supposed to be 130°C - 140°C and the boiling points of the impurities that could have been in the crude ester have lower boiling points. Therefore, since the crude product had a boiling point of 124°C, it indicated that there were some impurities in the crude product. When looking at the IR spectrum, it can be seen that there is no spike around 3235cm-1, which…

Banana oil as an artificial flavoring in the food industry is immense. Synthetic Banana flavorings can be used as a substitute for natural banana flavoring in the events that banana tree crops are damage or in limited supply. It is very important that the artificial banana flavoring be synthesized in such way that the product has a high level of purity. Fisher esterification is a process whereby an ester is prepared, and involves heating a carboxylic acid with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst, which is used to expedite the reaction. In this experiment the process was used to synthesis isopentyl alcohol, which was the limiting reagent, with sulfuric acid and excess of acetic acid. Had equal amounts of acetic acid and isopenthyl alcohol been used, approximately only two thirds of each would be converted to acetate. This mixture was heated under reflux for one hour to ensure that the reaction went to completion.…
