Alka Seltzer Experiment
After the experiment, I thought and considered that my hypothesis was correct. It had been that the half crushed tablet had dissolved much faster then the other types of tablet. By increasing the surface area the reaction rate of the tablet will dissolve much faster.
The purpose of this experiment was the reaction rate, and how surface area affected the reaction rate between water and alka seltzer tablets. The half crushed tablet had more particles in the tablet causing more surface area to dissolve in the water. The more surface area in the tablet, the more efficient it is in reacting in with water. Overall in my experiment, it was successful and it was a valid experiment. This experiment had taught me and to understand that the effect

    Surface area is known to be beneficial to keeping organisms alive it allows huge organs such as the intestines to fit in a small area by being coiled and packed together tightly. This experiment looked if the surface area to volume ratio affected the speed of a chemical reaction. For this experiment, a film container was filled one-half full with water. Then an Alka-Seltzer tablet was added, quickly covered with a cap and was observed until the film cap popped off. The time was then immediately recorded and the procedure was the repeated three times each with whole and crushed Alka-Seltzer tablets. Then results from three fellow classmates' experiments would be recorded and added to our own results. The hypothesis was that more surface area exposed and smaller volume would result in a faster chemical reaction of the material. Since the Alka-Seltzer tablet would be less exposed and have a larger volume as a whole, the crushed tablet was thought to have a faster chemical reaction due to its small volume and larger exposure. The hypothesis was supported. The whole Alka-Seltzer tablet had an average of 7.80 seconds from twelve trials, while the crushed tablet had an average of only 3.56 seconds from twelve trials.     An Alka-Seltzer tablet was accurately weighed and recorded using a weighing boat and analytical balance. A fragmented piece between 0.2100g and 0.2800g was also weighed and recorded. 500mL of water was placed in a 600mL beaker. 80mL of water was then mixed with 20mL of 6M HCl in a 150mL beaker to create 1.2M HCl. A 1.5g piece of Alka-Seltzer tablet was then added to the HCl solution. After complete evolution of CO2, gravity filtration was used to catch all of the starch produced from the reaction. The buret was filled with the filtrated solution and the glass tube end of a rubber tube was inserted about 2 inches into the mouth of the buret. While keeping a finger over the buret mouth, the entire buret was quickly inverted and the tubing and mouth completely submerged into the water in the 600mL beaker. The buret was then clamped into place while double checking the buret mouth was under the water level and the rubber tubing was not pinched.     According to Figures 1 and 2, the charts compare the differences between the gummy bears before (Day 1), and after (Day 2). More specifically, my hypothesis was proven to be correct, as the green gummy bear did not change in size, color, and weight, showing that the gummy bear did not react to the absence of a solvent. The yellow gummy bear drastically changed in size, color, and weight, in addition to the red gummy bear, in salt water, and water, as the solution passed through the gummy bear, through the process of osmosis, and further expanded the gummy bears’ size/weight, through the process of diffusion.
