They are jealous of her so they exclude her and don’t want her to participate with them. However, this is untrue because the jealousy in the kids comes from the fact that they have been in ‘darkness’ and they themselves have never experienced the sun. This is why the theme is not jealousy however the ‘darkness’ that takes over them. Later in the story the reader encounters another example of how the kids are compelled by ‘darkness’ when the story describes Margot as, “She was an old photograph from an old album,” this is a comparison in the story describing how she was different than the other kids because she has experienced the sun and knows something else besides the darkness. Another example is when the author describes Margot’s memories as the, ”...biggest crime...” The reason why this is a crime because she remembers what it’s like to feel the sun and they don’t.
