All Summer In A Day By Ray Bradbury
In the dystopian story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury it takes place on a colonized planet of Venus. On Venus it always rains and focuses on school kids. Only the main character Margot remembers what the sun feels like, this is because she came from the planet Earth. For this reason many of her peers resent her and make fun of her. Throughout the story the reader can tell that the ‘darkness’ may cloud someone's judgment until they see the light. In the beginning this is shown when the story describes the kid’s experiences with the sun as, “They were all nine years old, and if there had been a day, seven years ago, when the sun came out for an hour and showed its face to the stunned world, they could not recall.” This show how they have …show more content…
This also shown when the kids push Margot away from the window when the rain starts to slow.
They are jealous of her so they exclude her and don’t want her to participate with them. However, this is untrue because the jealousy in the kids comes from the fact that they have been in ‘darkness’ and they themselves have never experienced the sun. This is why the theme is not jealousy however the ‘darkness’ that takes over them. Later in the story the reader encounters another example of how the kids are compelled by ‘darkness’ when the story describes Margot as, “She was an old photograph from an old album,” this is a comparison in the story describing how she was different than the other kids because she has experienced the sun and knows something else besides the darkness. Another example is when the author describes Margot’s memories as the, ”...biggest crime...” The reason why this is a crime because she remembers what it’s like to feel the sun and they don’t. Margot also describes the sun however, the kids don’t believe her and they call it lies. This shows how the ‘darkness’ has affected them and they deny what is actually

At the beginning, Annie Dillard vividly describes the surrounding area before the total eclipse. This same vivid imagery is used throughout the text and allows the reader to experience everything Annie Dillard experienced. This thorough recounterance, in the text, “Total Eclipse,” helps the reader understand Dillards emotions through the use of different figurative devices. The detailed describing words used in paragraph two, “All the people you see in the photograph.are now dead. I was watching a faded color print of a movie filmed in the middle ages,” make it seem as though the author is afraid and as if she feels she is in a foreign place.…

    3. The tone and mood of the poem are mysterious at the beginning when it is not clear what is really going on, but kind of uncomfortable at the end when the reader identifies what the children had done and how they have made their mother feel embarrassed from their actions. Maxine Tynes uses imagery, comparison and connotation ("dipped in the brown skin magic") to convey this mood and tone.…

References: to light and dark throughout the poem mirror the persona’s transition from childhood to adulthood, evident in the repetition in “Ambiguous light. Ambiguous sky”. This marks the shift from day to night, but also foreshadows the persona’s progression into adult maturity and acceptance that time is transient. Allison Hoddinott’s idea that time is the persona’s “enemy” enhances my understanding that the persona has had an ongoing conflict with the transience of time. Hoddinott’s idea is displayed through the metaphor, “stolen from me those hours of unreturning light”. The melancholy tone of the passing of time depicts the child as having a sense of ownership of time which has been irrevocably lost, highlighting that time is something which cannot be regained. Therefore, Harwood uses natural imagery in ‘The Violets’ to express an acceptance of the transience of time, and hence the persona shifts from the innocence of childhood to the maturity of adulthood.…

In Mary Oliver’s A Summer’s Day, The grasshopper symbolizes the small things that we take for granted on a daily basis. The small details in life are the things that can help us appreciate living more. We do not know what’s next to come after this life on earth, nor do we know for sure what will happen in the next year or hour or second. The choices we make now are critical to our futures, even at the smallest degree. Although our futures are not set in stone, it is good to have a plan of action. A good start in figuring out my plan was looking at the bigger picture, but once I had done this, I had to dig deeper into detail, so that one day someone may be the spectator of my success as Mary was the spectator of the grasshoppers gracefulness.…

Grey, a color considered to be a shade, often represents the loss of emotion and the dullness in people and objects. Yet, this color exhibits the true misconception of how the characters perceive reality. “About half way between West Egg and New York.. is a valley of shadows” upon “the grey land” with “ash-grey men” and “lines of grey cars” (Fitzgerald 23). Shadows often evoke the unknown and create a sense of mystery which is true for the people of West Egg. In their “reality”, colors such as white, blue and gold are used to illustrate their exuberant homes and lives while the rest of the world in covered in this grey area. The “Valley of Shadows” connects to grey since it is between the two areas: one being the dream and fantasy while the other is the nightmare. This balance between the light and dark is what one would experience in daily life involving issues including stress, family and love. The “West Eggers” don’t experience much of true life since they are blanketed with materialistic items and unrealistic views. The “reality shade” is around them however they never experience it due to the veil that covers their eyes. Like a bride on her wedding day, only then when the groom removes the veil can she see the reality that she is getting married. Until then, only the dream of being married encompasses her thoughts. Kathleen Parkinson acknowledges “he…

Like most people fear and irrational thinking would kick in, also then recovery from this is not just a hug from a parent but a mental breakdown. Luckily most people over the age of ten have gotten over this fear, and this might have seemed like it took a great amount of courage for oneself. In Nightfall, it takes place in a world where there is always at least one sun in the sky at all times, until every two thousand forty-nine years there is darkness for a total of ten to fourteen hours. During these hours people go psycho, fires are formed and people lose their minds. These times are where the courage of the scientist is shown and they realize that it is because of the gravitation of the planet.…
