Alligator Story
Have you ever heard the story about the New York sewer alligators? I see some of you have. Well, the story goes like this; A family in New York decides to relent to their children’s requests for alligator pets. This, of course, is a terrible idea. The family either releases them into the sewers in purpose, or the gators escaped, depending on who you ask. Either way, there’s now a bunch of alligators in the New York sewers, striking fear into the hearts of the waste management service. How about ‘twinkle twinkle little star’? More people are on board with that. We’ve all heard the song.

Oh, by the way; that alligator story? Totally false. There are no alligators in the sewers, and it never happened. Despite that fact, the stories about sewer gators have been around since about 1930.

Where am I going with this, you ask? Well, the story and the

A successful replicator needs to be true to the original, stay true for a long time, and replicate quickly.

Longevity is first, and is rather self-explanatory. The longer a gene or meme can last, the more chances it will have in replicating itself, passing on its message. For instance, the alligator story is a fantastic meme, because it is interesting enough to stay in someone’s memory and unique enough to warrant sharing.

Next is Fecundity, or the ability to rapidly reproduce. For instance, the common fruit fly can lay several thousand eggs in a day, and each fruit fly is ready to breed the next generation within a week. The fruit fly genes get copied thousands of times. Likewise, memes are often repeated to others, especially if they become a cultural corner stone, like ‘twinkle twinkle’ or ‘happy birthday to you’. Each time you repeat the meme, you have the chance of giving it to someone who didn’t previously have that knowledge.

Here, I’ll write the terms on the board. Longevity, Fecundity, and

In Amber Bierce’s harrowing short story “Chickamauga,” the author portrays that war is not all honor and glory, but momentous and deathly through imagery. In a make-believe game of battle, a little boy ventured further than his normal grounds and “went forward toward the dark inclosing wood.” The writer uses the words “dark” and “inclosing” to make the reader feel more on edge, and assemble an ominous atmosphere. It hints that this boy is no longer playing a recreation for children. Later on, the child runs into damaged soldiers who’s “creeping figures” had been lit up by a “strange red light,” giving them “monstrous” shadows.…

    Brunvand Urban Legend

The fact that “Alligator in the Sewer” and “Spider in the hairdo” survived in culture can give an insight on the importance of those urban legends for people. Since the horrific times of epidemics, contamination and medical concerns have always been present and the presence of urban legends in culture is a way to propagate the general anxiety (Brunvand). Art forms in general such as music are kind of doing the same process of contamination, by getting songs stuck in one’s head over and over again. By propagating, music spreads moral messages, sometimes using urban legends. According to researcher Ian Inglis, one of the reasons why urban legends are so present in music is because of their vagueness of them allows the musicians to really appropriate the legends for themselves and add details depending on their intentions. Having urban legends in music has some specific social functions, which are the reasons why they still are in the picture today. First, they are indeed conversational topics to assist and maintain social relationships. Connecting urban legends to music allows further social interactions and is a popular subject of discussion. Second, they can be considered as modern variants of deeper often religious myths about legendary places, people, texts such as Jesus Christ, Atlantis, Camelot, Siddartha Gautama, and more. Third, they allow the public…

Charles Darwin’s theory states that the change in evolution is the variation in each generation and different individual surviving features with different combinations of the variable. The Individuals with characteristics that increase their probability of survival will be able to reproduce more often and their offspring will also benefit as there would be an advantage because it would be passed on to the offspring. Over time these variation of characteristics will spread through the population. (College, 2009)…

I am a true Floridian born and raised for the first fourteen years of my life in Homestead, Florida. My childhood growing up was difficult due to my mother’s breast cancer diagnosis, which profoundly affected my life. Being an only child and the thought of possibly losing my mother to cancer was devastating, especially since my father was absent the majority of my life. During my middle school years, I struggled so my mother decided to homeschool me. In 2011, my family relocated to Lakeland, Florida and I entered high school at Victory Christian Academy developing new friendships along with fond memories. Following graduation in 2015, the next year of my life was spent contemplating decisions on whether to register for college or obtain…
