Much like any other story, Alma, from Time of the Wolves developed a person vs self conflict. Alma is the type of person who demonstrates a caring personality, and will do what needs to be done. Alma doesn't enjoy Sarah's company, nor does she enjoy the weather, …show more content…
nevertheless, she went to take care of Sarah. Not only did Alma have to deal with displeasure of being around Sarah, between the wolves and the weather, she also had to deal with fear. Much like Alma, Shackleton from Shipwrecked at the bottom of the world had to deal with fear. Shackleton did a very good job at hiding his fear and keeping his men in order. The entire time Shackleton stayed confident, and had the I-will-not-give-up attitude, which demonstrates his leadership skills. Rob, from Into Thin Air, acts upon leadership. Throughout the book, Rob had to decide what was best in terms of leadership, between, the best way to acclimatize clients, when and how much to push the group, and whether or not to enforce a turnaround time. Rob has a caring, practical nature, and looks out for what is in the best interest of all.
Although Alma had her own conflicts to overcome, she also had a conflict between another character and herself. When Sarah attacked Alma, Alma tried her best to stay calm and handle both Sarah and the wolves at the same time. Although Alma had quite the conflict, she is not the only one, Shackleton himself had a few authority problems. McNeish refused to follow Shackleton's orders. Therefore calmly, with no yelling, nor was he demanding that McNeish follows him, Shackleton handles the situation. Dealing with overwhelming, and everlasting issues, Shackleton increases the respect of his crew. Ian did not have much respect for Rob. With his I-don't-have-to-listen-to-you attitude, Ian tried climbing whenever he wanted, despite all safety precautions Rob set out for the group. Respectfully, Rob tried to handle Ian, looking at the situations from a practical and realistic perspective, as well as looking out for everyone else on the mountain.
With the sudden snow and wind, Alma was not able to go anywhere.
Not only did she have to settle down the horses, but she had to take on a pack of wolves. Knowing she didn't have a great shot, she still shot at the wolves. Alma did what had to be done and never gave up. Never giving up, Shackleton and his crew had to overcome many challenges due to nature. When the ship initially crashed the crew hoped that they could get it unstuck, unfortunately for them their ship tumbled down. With limited resources the crew had to travel across the ice flow, while the ice was constantly shifting. At one point in the adventure, Orda-Leese was attacked by an elephant seal and had to fight him off, with the help of a crew member. Eventually Shackleton had to pick some crew members to travel from Elephant Island to South Georgia Island with him. Not knowing what the weather conditions would be like and not having any resources to help, Shackleton and those selected few had to navigate themselves through the harsh waters. Throughout all of this, every individual had to be persistent, daring, and unwilling to give up. Much like the Shackleton crew, Every individual from Into Thin Air, had to deal with frigid weather. Anywhere from the wind to the snow, the weather was a huge issue. Not only was harsh weather an issue, but lack of oxygen from high altitudes was consistently an uprising. Anywhere from a night at base camp to surviving the death zone, every individual had to be strong, and willing to deal with the condition and catastrophe they brought upon
themselves.
Although conflict is not always a good thing, there is always a way to deal with it. Alma, Shackleton, and Rob had all to deal with all three conflicts in such different ways, which helped them grow as a stronger character. There cannot be an exceptional story nor an exceptional character within a story without conflict.
