Alone Edgar Allan Poe

Alone by Edgar Allan Poe is one of his lesser known works, it was published after he had passed. The meaning remained deep all the same. This poem reflects his emotions and his deeper feelings. Alone also has a deep-seated meaning. The whole meaning behind the poem is just what it truly means to feel alone and beside yourself. Poe’s purpose for the poem is show just how awful it is to feel as though you have no one, a feeling he has come to know. Alone managed to put forth a deep meaning and bring the reader a multitude of emotions in just one stanza. Proof of the meaning and purpose of the piece starts in the very first line it reads “From childhood's hour I have not been As others were”. Whilst this may seem trivial and unimportant it is
the narrator's first indication of them feeling different and forlorned. Based on this it’s easy to see the narrator's isn’t happy and this brings the reader a sense of sorrow and possibly pity for the narrator. Secondly, in the seventh and eighth lines the narrator states “I could not awaken My heart to joy at the same tone --And all I lov'd -- I lov'd alone”. The narrator divulges into the fact that he couldn’t be happy and he often felt depressed and isolated from everyone and that the things he enjoyed and took interest in he did that alone. Lastly, in line 9 continuing to the end of the poem it expresses that “Then -- in my childhood -- in the dawn Of a most stormy life” this blatantly states that narrator feels as though they’ve had a rough life, as storms often symbolizes anger and sadness. Loneliness and sadness often walk hand in hand, especially as a kid it can be rough feeling as though you have no one, so the narrator shows that it's been rough and awful feeling so dejected from society, which is the message that Edgar Allan Poe was trying to convey. Poe’s purpose in writing this piece to to express loneliness and how it can completely alter a person's perceptions about life.
