Born on April 24, 1853 in Paris to Louis and Zoe Bertillon. He has an older brother named Jacques Bertillon, born November 11, 1851. Alphonse passed before his brother Jacques.
During his younger years, Alphonse went to secondary school. He attended the Imperial Lycée of Versailles. Sadly, he was expelled for reasons unknown. Shortly after he was conscripted into the French army in 1875. When he returned from the war he did not pursue a higher education.
Alphonse did a few jobs here and there until his father got him a job at the police station. March 15, 1879 marks the start of his police career. His job was to keep track of the records. Alphonse noticed that there was no organized filing system so it was extremely hard to retrieve specific information from the records; making them completely useless. He noticed the physical descriptions were way too vague to be used.
Alphonse created a system of physical measurements that were more descriptive. Used photography to take pictures of the crime scenes and suspects. He created the first scientific method of identifying criminals (the Bertillon System).
Alphonse never married and he had no kids. He suffered from nosebleeds and migraines. According to his father he had no social skills, was shy, and didn’t express himself well. When he spoke he sounded rude and brusque.
