People generally see everyday involve mainstream media. It disseminated the largest distribution channel. Such as: broadcast in an evening or the prime time newscast in television; tabloids, the variety of magazines; news portals. Therefore the mainstream media represents the majority of media consumers are preferred. It also indicates those media generally reflective of the prevailing currents of thought, influence, or activity. In contrast, alternative media emerges is directly against mainstream media and challenge schemes of popular media. Though it’s content and non-commercial organizational structure, alternative media break normal mainstream media that which has celebrities as the centre and the profit as the purpose. In my essay, firstly I will explain the detail of the different between alternative media and mainstream media. Secondly, I will illustrate the specific example to approach the distinction between alternative media and mainstream. Thirdly, I will to critical and present my own opinion.
Firstly, the characteristic of alternative media is it non-profit and non-commercial. Follow by the media expansion and the pursuit of profit, mass media experience the credibility decline and the news “dumbing- down”. In this situation, alternative media often aim to report the ‘truth’ and challenge existing powers, also to represent marginalized groups, and to foster grass-roots communities of interest. As Atton (2002:35) point out “we might consider the entire range of alternative and radical media as representing challenges to hegemony”. Besides, Downing et al. (2001: v) describe the alternative is “vision to hegemonic policies, priorities and perspective”.
