During the period of war leading up to the drop of the bombs the United States soldiers were physically and mentally drained from four long years of continual warfare, on the other hand the Japanese were refusing to give up. The United States military planners believed that the Japanese would continue to fight until their last man. Before the decision to drop the bomb was made the allied forces made demand for the Japanese for an unconditional surrender. The demand stated that a refusal of the demand would result in total destruction but they made no mention of the atomic bombs.
