Title: The Densities of Liquids and Solids

Introduction
The matter can be observed by determining, measuring and monitoring its chemical and physical properties. In this experiment the densities of liquids and solids will be determined. The density is an intensive property of matter that does not depend on the substance’s quantity, and thus density can be used to identify a solid or any liquid. Generally, the density of a matter changes with the pressure and temperature outside. [1] As the pressure on the object increases the volume of the object decreases and hence the density of the object increases. [1] On the other hand, as the temperature increases the volume of the substance increases and its density decreases. [1]
The density of a substance can be found if the mass and volume of that substance are known, since the density is the ratio of the mass to its volume
Density =
The SI derived unit for the density is kg/m3. The mass of a substance can be found by weighing it on the analytical balances. By subtracting the mass of the empty container from the mass of the container with the liquid in it, the mass of a sample of liquid in a container can be found. [2] The volume of a liquid can be found by using the calibrated container. Also the graduated cylinder is used in a laboratory for the volume measurements. [2] To determine the volume of a solid, the easiest way is to precisely measure the volume of a liquid taken place of when the amount of the solid was submerged in the liquid. The volume of the liquid which displaces the solid is the volume of the solid. [2]

Aim
The purpose of this experiment is to give students understanding of the common laboratory equipment and to determine the density of a liquid and a solid. In addition, this lab practical is assumed

    III. Procedure- The first thing one must do to identify which substance is which is to calculate the densities. To do this, one must take the mass and volume of each individual substance. Starting with mass, one can use the triple beam balance. Make sure the balanced is zeroed. Once that is true, place the object onto the balance a carefully find the mass of the object. Repeat and record the results found of each individual substance. To find the volume, one can use the water displacement method. One will fill up a graduated cylinder with water to a specific amount. 20 mL is sufficient. Once completed, one will drop one of the substances into the graduated cylinder and record how far the water level rises. If it starts at 20mL and rises to 22mL then the volume of the substance is 22mL minus 20mL, so 2mL. Repeat and record the results found of each individual substance.…

    The purpose of the Density Lab was to determine the identity of four unknown solids and two unknown liquids by calculating their densities and comparing them to a density chart, taking into account error analysis and finally classifying the substances. In order to calculate this density, we first found the mass of the container that was to be holding the substances. We then found the volume of the substance, and lastly determined the mass of the container and substance. We subtracted (Container + Substance) – Container to find the mass of simply the substance.
