The novel The Aleutian Sparrow by Karen Hesse, portrays the American Government for being cruel and unfair to the indigenous people of the Aleutian Islands. Once at the camp the American Government abandons them leaving them to fend for themselves. The Aleuts are left with only a few building materials and tools to start a new life.“Our government spends large sums of money to piece lives back together. No money is spent here.” Meaning that the government will go out of their way and will spend what ever to make the Aleuts feel good and happy. But this is clearly wrong and they are left to survive on the little they are given.
After the Aleuts are settled in many go to look for work. Unfortunately the Ketchikan locals do not approve this. There are many quotes in this text against the Aleuts. “Maybe they don’t like the way we look” this is said by the main character indicating that they have an idea of why they can not work. This is unfair to the Aleuts as they have no way of getting an income to help start their new lives. The main character’s Mother does how ever find a job but it is not a good one. I think that this is poor and should never occur in the world today.
On returning home to the Aleutian Island's the locals come home to find that the soldiers of war who were fighting for them had completely trashed the islands. “On the Aleutians holy places collapsed under the bombs, one after another, like toy buildings” This gives the reader a picture in their heads of the war torn islands. Like everyone else the soldiers have been unfair and disrespectful to the people of the Aleutian Islands not only destroying there homes and their sanctuaries but their lives. Homes will have to be rebuilt using the Aleuts own time and money. I think this is
