Bridge to Terabithia is a book that I read that over my summer break.
This book was just recently made into a film, although the ambition I understood from is still present in the movie. In the book a young boy named Jess Aarons, a fifth grade boy, who become friends with his new neighbor and classmate Leslie Burke. Leslie is a smart girl with a wild imagination, while Jess is a sports fanatic and has a secret love of drawing. Jess doesn’t get along with his family very well, his mother favors his sisters and his father is never home. Leslie on the other hand is an only child with parents as writers. As Jess and Leslie begin to become closer, Leslie notices how much pressure is on Jess and how it is affecting him. So, to get away from all the stress and pressure of the outside world, together they create a kingdom full of glorious and magical things, such as giants and castles. This kingdom is only open to Jess and Leslie with their creative
imaginations. Although we all have our own style of imaginations, each is unique and has a specific purpose to the person. In Jess’s situation he needed the will power to “get away” from all of his troubles, and Leslie was there to encourage him, to let him be himself in his own imaginative world. This train of thought helped him to have the ambition to not worry about others and to just think of him. In response to creating a magical kingdom he has also show courage. In his kingdom shows some of his trials that he faces in real life. For example he learns to stand up for himself to a bully he has dealt with. Jess gains the courage to face the world by crushing his fears. This leads to more ambition because little by little he is becoming more of the person he wants to be, just by his creation of the magical world inside. Macy and Karen had been friends since preschool. “I thought we would be friends for life” said Macy. At the age of 10 Karen found a lump in her leg, soon after she found out it was cancer. She didn’t think too much of it, but it was the biggest shock to her family members and Macy. A few weeks later it was removed, but right when everyone thought it was over, the cancer was back. As time got harder for Karen, she became weaker, paler, and thinner. Macy stated “It was one thing after the next”. Macy was on her way home from school when she found out that cancer had taken the life of her beautiful, laughing friend. “All I can do is think about the happy times we shared together. In my head Karen is smiling and shaking her blonde hair in the sunshine. That’s how I will always remember her”, quoted Macy. (http//bbc.co.uk.switch/slink. html) Even through all the hardships, Macy showed will power just by being there for her friend and helping out the family through their difficult times. This had have been a difficult task, to watch your best friend lying there suffering knowing there is nothing you can do and trusting the doctors to do everything to help. Karen, on the other hand, showed courage by not blaming anyone for what was happening to her. Macy also showed courage by stating how she would remember her friend and finding the strength to move forward. This shows a lot of ambition because as you just read she found the desire to move forward toward success. Ambition is shown everyday whether you know it or not. In order to achieve ambition you need to have and show that you have the will power and courage. Will power tolook straight on at the challenge and then courage to take on that challenge and overcome it.
