All depends on the principles which direct them.” In other words, ambition is not only aspirations that will help people strive to their successes, but it can also fuel a dangerous desire that people will manipulate and use toward ruthless acts. It is not, however, the only aspect of being a doctor. Being a doctor is like being a superhero. Human lives literally lie in the hands of doctors - this can be a wonderful thing or a terrible thing depending on the person. One bad decision can lead to a person dying and this is the aspect of the medical career path most doctors do not seem to talk about. Sure, the salary is great and it surely allows for bragging rights, but being a doctor is slightly terrifying. It is a job that demands a high-level of confidence and concentration. One should become a doctor with the best intention - to help people. If one becomes a doctor because they want to make a lot of money, there is no ambition to actually help people get better and more patients suffer because of this. Doctors are always needed; the job opportunities are not scarce. As long as you are good at what you do and enjoy doing it, a career in medicine will be wonderful in the long…

Why I Want to be a Doctor

    • 655 Words

A doctor! A healer! A time-honoured ancient profession. Why Medicine? I am in awe of Medicine's capabilities and evolution. Multiorgan transplantation, in-vitro fertilization (IVF), robotic laparoscopic surgery, positron emission tomography (PET), stem cell research, etc. The list goes on. Medicine is a vocation that I have long dreamt of practising. The idea of being able to help ill people and relieve the physical and mental problems of the sick moves me. I have always envisioned myself doing that. I want to study medicine, for the simple reason that I would like to 'help' people. That may seem like an overrated word but it is the essence of my interest in medicine.Medicine, I think, is both a science and an art. Its science based on method, process, analysis and emperical evidence while its art thrives on innovation, lateral thinking and creativity. The best doctors therefore are equally right and left brained individuals who balance the orthodoxy and tradition of medicine with an originality and inventiveness. Hippocrates, the greatest physician of his time rejected illness to be caused by superstitions, evil spirits and disfavor of the gods but believed in a physical and rational explanation. Doctoring is never just a 'job', it is a way of life catalyzing the wonder of healing. A friend of my father, Professor Chua Kaw Beng visited us shortly after his work on the discovery of Nipah Virus in 2002. Professor Chua is a pediatrician turned virologist who received the Charles C Shepard Science Award (USA) for his effort on the Nipah Virus in 2005.I was inspired by his story of venturing into the jungle at dawn to collect bat urine specimens for his work with his team. Their elation with the confirmation from Centre of Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta that it was a new virus is certainly touching. Medicine deals with people, not just cases or numbers. I have had the good fortune of doing a clinical attachment with my father who is a consultant general surgeon in…

Aspiration is a form of desire tempered by thoughtfulness, integrity and a self-interest that takes into account the interests of others too. While ambition is focused totally on the goal, aspiration never loses sight of either the goal or the means used to attain it. Aspiration allows us to ‘breathe freely’ (assāsa, M.I,64) after we have achieved our goal, because we know we have done it without compromising our values or disadvantaging others.…

When walking into a hospital most people feel squeamish and uncomfortable. For me I have the feeling of belonging and home. I can remember the exact time when I decided to become a doctor. I was only eight years old and I was visiting my grandpa who had just had a life risking surgery and came out the other end okay. At this age I really don’t understand what all was going on. All I knew is the doctor had saved my grandpa, and I had more years to spend with him. When I walked into the room the doctor was standing over my grandpa and they were both laughing.
